Eddie Welton
Eddie Welton was chairman of KCC for 36 years until his death in 1975.
He was one of the finest and quickest bowlers in the county in his
prime, renown for his exceptional accuracy.
He captained the first team for 17 years either side of World war II.
Eddie's career as an eminent bowler came to an end at the beginning of
the 1950's but he continued to play for the 2nd XI bowling with less
speed but with the same accuracy. He batted slightly higher in the
order and fielded
'with an underam flick from the boundary' before finally deciding to
make the move to umpiring.
Eddie worked as a teacher at Kibworth Junior school and Hanbury
School, Church Langton where he was deputy head and in charge of PE
before he returned to Kibworth Primary school as the headmaster.. He
was an enthusiastic
singer who performed with the Kibworth Gilbert & Sullivan
Operatic Society
and the Market Harborough Operatic Society and would regularly
entertain guests at the annual dinner which was in the 1960's held in
the Kibworth Band hut. 'Three little maids from school' from 'The
Mikado' is remembered
as a particular favourite.
