KIBWORTH CRICKET CLUB - 1846 Season

From 1828 to 1845 Philip Porter has found no reports on Kibworth cricket in the Leicester papers. The oldest record of a Kibworth side playing cricket is found in THE LEICESTERSHIRE MERCURY from 12th September 1846. It details a game played on 7th September between the married and single but also dates the formation of the club to that spring.

Kibworth Cricketting.—On Monday, the 7th, a cricket match was played at this place, the married against the single. The club was only established at the commencement of the spring, and this being the first match, it excited great interest, aud mauy went to see the sport. The single men went in first and scored 12, the married only 29. The single men in the second innings scored 58. Mr. F. Bathurst, (brother of the Rev. E. S. Bathhurst) scoring 34 himself. His batting and fielding were considered excellent. The married this time only scored 30. Mr. J. Brown on this side scored 15, and his play was very good. This cricket club was established by the Rev E. S. Bathurst, for the recreation of the working classes, and to create a spirit of unity between them and the middle and higher classes, many of which have joined the club. All distinction seems to be banished while in the field. A supper was provided at night at the house of Mr. C. Watts, the Old Swan, and tho evening was spent In the most agreeable manner.
