KIBWORTH CRICKET CLUB - 1881 Season

Leicester Mercury    1 Feb      A Cricketers Ball under the auspices of the Cricket Club took place in the village hall on Wednesday. The room was tastefully decorated and the floor covered with suitable canvas. There were about ninety persons. Dancing was splendidly kept up, to the strains of an efficient quadrille band, until the small hours of the morning. Mr. F. Underwood officiated as "M. C." and the affair, thanks to the energetic committee was a success. The proceedings, which it is expected, will tangibly augment the fund for levelling the new cricket ground. Refreshments were supplied by Mr. & Mrs. Bolton of the Coach & Horses Inn.

Leicester Chronicle           30 Apr    The searching for a suitable ground for cricket has become an almost insuperable difficulty. Most of the few really good fields for cricket near to the village have been rendered unfit for the purpose by the quality of draining done during the winter, whilst the good grounds available are too remote a distance to be acceptable. At an adjourned meeting, held in the village hall on Saturday evening, a few persons interested in the game, decided to apply for the use of a field belonging to the Grammar School, and in the occupation of Mr. Waterfield. Regrettably apathy is manifested in this general popular pastime, and the fame formally earned by Kibworth for cricket has of late materially declined. [An earlier report on the drainage states: The draining of the fields around Kibworth had ceased, due to the fact that they had ran out clay pipes used for the purpose.]

Market Harborough Advertiser           31 May  The KCC held a meeting in the village hall on Monday week last, under the presidency of Mr. Cayzer. The committee had not been able to obtain another field for play, so it was decided to engage the one used for several years past (although;'it has been considerably disturbed being drained - according the Northampton Mercury report of the same meeting) A committee and officers were afterwards appointed.

Note.      The two reports above, in a space of 3 months, seem to contradict themselves. The first stating a "new cricket ground," and the second, "one used for several years past." ?

Leicester Journal            1 July     A match was played at Kibworth on June 23rd, between KCC and Tur Langton C C., and resulted in an easy victory for Kibworth.
