Secretary's Report to
AGM Held in the tea room (Monday 16th April 1962)
I would like to put the cart before the horse this year.
So often this report starts with the Club record of matches played
during the past season. I
would like this year to start by referring to the means whereby these
matches are made possible. It is no good arranging fixtures if the
matches cannot
be played through lack of ground preparation or too little money
available to provide the necessary upkeep and materials, or for that
matter if there
are not enough players to fulfil the fixtures.
Throughout the meeting I hope we shall all be very conscious of the
great debt we owe to the Tote collectors. I nearly said ALL the tote
collectors,
I really mean the few tote collectors. There are 11 regular collectors
of whom 3 are actual playing members. It amazes me how people can sleep
at night,
consciences cannot be very clear if they have any. Lip service is not
enough, we must see the results of new collectors to help the other few
provide the
money for your cheap cricket. You can't get it so good at twice the
price anywhere else.
Now the wickets. Last season some of us breathed again for we saw that
some of our efforts to maintain a good table had not been wasted. Some
of our
young members set about the task of keeping the square in tip top
condition in real earnest. They were quick and not afraid to learn.
Furthermore
they were not afraid to work for their cricket. Their personal records
may have suffered somewhat; they may occasionally arrived late after a
heavy
mornings work for the afternoon's game. They may have been criticised
from time to time but I would like to say a very hearty and sincere
thank you to
them on behalf of those of us who have struggled so long to maintain
such a high standard. Not only did they work on Saturday mornings but
Sunday
was no day of rest or relaxation for them and they used every
opportunity during the week of improving or trying to improve some of
our amenities. I
offer here and now a very fervent prayer that God may give them
strength and encouragement to carry on in like vein for many years to
come.
The purchase of the gang mowers saved many headaches, no more borrowing
and bribing, no more groundsman's problems, and not a little saving in
money and time spent in mowing. Furthermore with the removal of the
road hedge and re-fencing, boundaries will soon be longer than they
have ever been
in the club's history.
During August we were shocked by the sudden death of our one-time
scorer and statistician Chris Martin. He served us well and I'm sure he
regrets none
of his time spend with and for us. Another "Old Faithful" passed on
during the close season. Tom Freer was a playing member of the club
well before
the beginning of this century. He had seen many changes, some good and
some no doubt bad, we shall miss his familiar face, may they both rest
in peace.
And so to the records, prepared this year I am pleased and very
grateful to say by the two captains.
