Secretary's Report to the 1970 AGM

I have just reminded us that this report must be briefer to give us more time for serious discussion of weightier problems. Quickly then - 1969 - a season
of great expectations, many of them magnificently fulfilled.
The new pavilion, duly opened by L.T. Daw before a distinguished gathering of vice-presidents and friends during the course of an equally enthralling
cricket match. We later in the year used the pavilion for a social evening and we were all delighted with the prospects here. (How well blessed we are with
such a wonderful set of wives to make such events to much more graciously acceptable). Many friends and vice-presidents were considerably impressed
with what they saw on these two occasions.
As usual we pay tribute to the gallant back-room boys who produce ground, wicket and pavilion in such good condition week after week after dreary week.
I personally (that means the same thing of course) would like to look on 1969 as being particularly memorable in that more than one event was organised
from outside the inner hierarchy, so to speak. I think particularly of that gloriously conceived and equally sucessfully concluded 6 a-side/sponsored walk
Sunday (the Swan have already won this seasons contest!). I think also of the more recent event - the dinner at the Lodge. As the Chairman said - it does
show that there are events which can be organised from outside.
Comparisons are odious - and Ron will forgive me this year if I mention by name L Sturgess and D Gowdridge (Ron is always with us and as his neighbour
I am the only person - other than his wife - to know how much time he spends on the field). Anyway to David and Leonard my own personal thanks for
releaving me of what could have proved too heavy a burden. I am sure we would like to show warm appreciation of the stalwart work of these three in
particular this year.
The records carefully prepared by Des Garner for 1st XI and Jim Wade for 2nd XI I will now read for the record;

1st XI:    Played 18    Won 1    Drawn 6    Lost 11

Batting:    Des Garner 250 runs @ 20.8,    T Cotton 235 runs @ 18.1, E Colson    87 runs @ 12.4

Bowling:    A Bacon    27 wkts @ 14.8,     R Beet 25 wkts @ 15.6

2nd XI:    Played 11    Won 2    Drawn 3    Lost 6

Batting:    T Dumer 43.3    B Hollis 34.5

Bowling:    D Slater 8 wkts @ 8.5    J Edwards 7 wkts @ 12.7

Thanks you Des and Jim and thank you both also for the help you have given me with circulars and the like during the past season. May I also at this
juncture interpose another word of thanks to our Chairman. I thought he did a really powerful job on Opening day and equally well at our recent dinner.
In the excitement of the last drinks and weariness at 10:30pm we are inclined to omit these gracious gestures.

A.S. Bolton (Hon Secretary)
