Season Review
Kibworth Cricket Club have enjoyed their most successful
season ever, writes Pete
Folley.
The 1st X1 became champions of the 1st Division of the Leicestershire
County Cricket
League while the 2nd X1 captured the Division 4 Title with both sides
playing great cricket
throughout the season. Brenden Fourie, our extremely popular and very
talented South
African guest, broke the League record when he captured 69 wickets for
the season. Our
season didn’t just revolve around our League achievements, there
were several other
notable performances with arguably our proudest being our first ever
appearance in the
County Cup Final at the County Ground, Grace Road. Sadly we lost this
one but not
without putting up a superb fighting performance (we will be back!).
Our support on the
day was superb with many people from the village in attendance. We did
however enjoy
more success in other competitions, winning the Everards League Cup
when we defeated
Ibstock Town in a thrilling Final.
Another exciting performance saw Kibworth capture the Rural Tankard
Trophy with
Sharnford the victims. Billesdon were yet another scalp, as the boys
convincingly won the
Lindsay Everard Challenge Cup. The Market Harborough Mid-Week Evening
League Title
was retained by Kibworth in fine style and, not to be outdone, the
Junior Section continue to
impress everyone. The Under 13s were narrowly defeated in the
Roach-Cloke Cup Final by
neighbours Market Harborough, with both teams entertaining a large
crowd with a superb
exhibition of cricket. Kibworth had ten youngsters who represented the
County at various
age groups from John Hanger Under 19s - John Hodges, Richard Bray and
Kean Folley at
Under 14, followed by Tom Bailey, Ian Tidd, Paul Harris and Brendon
O’Donovon at
Under 13 and finally, Matthew Trevor and Nicholas Ferraby at Under 11
level.
Last, but certainly not least, we have to mention a very special
achievement by John
Hodges. John has kept wicket for our 2nd X1 this term and impressed
everyone –with his
ability - he received the ultimate honour when he was selected to play
for England Under 14
team and performed with great distinction. John, incidentally, has also
signed schoolboy
forms with Leicester City . Congratulations John ! We are extremely
proud of you!
I couldn’t close without a mention for all the hard work put in
by everyone who works
so hard to make the Club and its’ facilities the envy of the
County. Success hasn’t just
happened, we’ve made it happen and hopefully can continue to
build on the solid
foundation that is now firmly in place.
Finally, the Club gained further recognition when we were asked to play
host to our
County 2nd X1 when they entertained Derbyshire during August. The
ground looked
resplendent, the wicket played well and Leicestershire won - a super
three days! So much
so that we have already been asked to host the Three Day game against
Surrey in July next
year.
With many long winter days ahead we are already looking forward to the
1995 Season
Roach-Clarke Cricket
Cup final report
The Under 13 Roach-Clarke Cricket Cup final was
played at the Langton Cricket
Ground one evening recently between Kibworth and Market Harborough.
Kibworth won the toss and elected to field. Harborough got off to a
good start with 10 off
the first over. T Milne (15) and J Pickering (28) were the main run
scorers. Matthew Trevor
21 for 2, Paul Harris 9 for 2 Tom Bailey 15 for 1 and Nick Ferraby 10
for 1 bowled well but
23 extras (14 wides) helped Harborough to a total of 103 for 6 in their
allotted 20 overs.
In fading light, the Kibworth openers put on 57 for the first wicket
before Paul Harris(18)
was out in the 11th over. Brendan O’Donovan dominated the bowling
with an excellent
innings of 57 ably supported by Tom Bailey (15 n.o.)
The two sides were well matched and in an exciting finish the
Harborough bowlers won the
game by bowling very tightly (only 6 extras) and containing Kibworth to
99 for 3 off their
allotted 20 overs.
