Superb weather in the lake district greeted the KCC party on arrival at Penrith....well everyone except Suresh who missed his pickup and had to take the train to meet us later in the day. A comprehensive defeat couldn't spoil the enjoyment of those laid out in the sun on the bank by the pavilion but with Poundsy compiling a stoggy fifty, sleep and beer were of more interest than the cricket. The evening was made memorable by the debut of Medland and Abbott as 'The booze brothers' to dispense the fines. After the first night in our accomodation, a number of Penrith guest houses, it was all aboard the bus for a trip to one of Englands most pictureque grounds, in the park at Keswick. On one of the hottest days of this exceptional summer Tom Bailey toiled for six wickets before 'Carlos' Fourie won the game virtually single handed with a superb century. Abbo's second appearance as Jake (or Ellwood, we were never sure) was greeted by the sight of every member of the touring party sporting lines of white zinc cream running back from their eyes in homage to his two untanned lines where his glasses perched on his ears.
After a day off either playing golf on the gorse covered links at Siloth on Solway (just ask Clatys how many balls he lost on that round) or in the Jennings brewery the final game was played at Appleby. An overnight thunderstorm made the pitch a lively one and it was never going to be a high scoring game but it turned into a last over, last wicket thriller to finish things in fine style and maybe even banish the memories of Abbo wearing a thong in the changing rooms.....there are photo's, pray you never see them. Back in Penrith pavilion for the final evening the fines money was spent on pizzas, Tom Matthew entertained us with songs on the guitar and Will Jennings floppy sunhat was ritually burnt in the car park.
