Match report

The champions were in town on Sunday as National Cup holders Kibworth visited Glasshouse Park for the first round of the Cockspur National Knockout Cup. The sponsors award the winners of this prestigious competition an all expenses paid trip to Barbados and the Wardens took a first step towards the Caribbean sun as they won by 90 runs.

Deprived of captain James Jordan at late notice, Steve Byng captained the side and having won the toss chose to bat. Openers Adam Smyth and Richard Bush gave the Wardens a solid start; Smyth in particular looking in good form. Both were dismissed trying to increase the run rate and it was left to Scott Stenning and Paul Henderson to take Wardens past the 100 mark in the 22 over. Stenning, fresh from a winter playing grade cricket in Western Australia, looked in good touch but failed to make the most of a good start as he was dismissed for 21. As the innings looked like it might falter Henderson came to the fore and he began to take the game away from the visitors. Indeed his innings was to prove the difference between the sides. Using a mixture of deft touches and brute force he hit twelve fours and three sixes in his 96 and departed to a warm ovation from the large crowd. Mark Pidgeon provided the perfect foil to Henderson as he accumulated 38 in his usual effective style before perishing in the pursuit of quick runs near the end of the innings. Some good late hitting from Eian Marillier helped the Wardens to a challenging total of 262 for 6 from their 45 overs.

Pidgeon and Rowe opened the bowling for the Wardens and both started with maidens. Rowe bowled with pace and control and took the first wicket: Hangar caught behind in the fourth over. Kibworth's captain Mike Sutliff showed why he plays for Cambridgeshire with several crunching boundaries through the off side field and as he and Ferraby added quick runs for the second wicket Kibworth looked menacing. A reflex catch by Smyth off the bowling of Rowe accounted for Ferraby and Kibworth were soon three wickets down as Rathod sent Smith's leg stump cartwheeling. Former Leicestershire batsman Russell Cobb then joined Sutliff and the pair batted sensibly to bring Kibworth back into contention at the half way stage of the innings. A slightly fortuitous catch was to prove the turning point as Stenning held on to another of Sutliff's brutal square cuts at the second attempt. Mason then came to the wicket and he too fell victim to Stenning; run out by a direct hit from cover point. Kibworth's remaining hopes rested on the shoulders of the experienced Cobb and once he and Thompson were LBW to Byng in successive balls the chase was over.
