It's true to say when facing last years Leicestershire champions, reigning National Knockout champions of England, a team including a current international test cricketer, and a team that can afford to play 3 ex-first class players in their second team, if this team plays to their potential there is very little one can do other than admire the skill of the opposition in question!!
Unfortunately for us, we happened to meet Kibworth on one of their better days this season and as such were due to be met with some very skilful and ruthless opposition. Having previously chosen to bat against a similarly skilful Loughborough side recently, I thought I would take the more positive approach on winning the toss and insert Kibworth in a pursuit of early wickets which may put pressure on a potentially fragile middle order. As it so happens we happened to witness the single best batting display against our side all season with a fantastically accomplished 132 from Kibworth opener John Hanger, very ably supported by 2 relatively useful batsmen in Mike Sutliff (42) and Omari Banks (61 off not many)! Chances in the field were few and far between and with our skipper giving theirs a second lease of life dropping him early on (sorry again Jenks – seem to have heard that once or twice before!!) and with Phil dropping a deep catch when Hanger was on 80 odd. It became clear relatively early, the bowling and fielding objective was more 'damage limitation' rather than our usual attacking aggressive style of bowling. Ali (1-73 off 13) and Dys (0-53 off 10) in particular, bowled very admirably until relatively expensive last overs cost them some very good bowling figures (considering the match situation). Kibworth ending their innings on 289 for 3 off their full 50 overs.
Although this was a daunting task, a required run rate of 6 an over for 50 overs was not inconceivable giving the fast scoring nature of the small Kibworth ground. The early losses of and Ali seemed to dent our chances slightly but Steve Ingall (58) and James Wigley (36) showed their class (and bottle – particularly the 'helmet-less Ingall!) to put us in a good position of 109 for 2 at the half-way stage. The wicket of Steve closely followed by that of Wigs meant the innings lost its momentum, and we rather needlessly collapsed and lost 5 wickets for 9 runs, Omari Banks with his tall, bouncy off-spin the tormenter-in-chief! We never recovered from the middle order collapse, and ended up being bowled all out for 160 in the 44 over, 6 runs short of another batting point.
Looking back at the end of the game, I think it would be a disservice to Kibworth and the continued effort of our lads in the field to criticise anything about that performance. Having got so close to 166 and another batting point, I guess I could be over-critical and say we should have achieved that, but I believe the better team won the match and showed to us the level of performance required to take on one of the best teams around!!
Good effort lads, think the take-home message from this one is – 'watch and learn' sometimes you have to give the opposition credit for playing some quality cricket – unfortunately for us – it was one of those days!
