Match Report

Now I wouldn't say it was hot but a wandering cannibal might have been tempted to leave Abbo wrapped in tin foil on the outfield and come back a couple of hours later with Mrs Cannibal and the little ankle biters (sorry about that one) for a slap up feast. Under such circumstances it was imperative that the skipper should win the toss and bat, for once he obliged.

Lutterworth had come with a really strong line up for a Sunday and the home side knew they would be up against it but Kibby got away to a flier. Ken Pounds and Tom Bale were using the quick outfield to good effect and the score stood at 40 after 4 overs. Ken was obviously taking too many liabilities with the erratic bowling and was soon on the receiving end of some short pitched bowling, I am sure that Age Concern will have a thing or two to say about that.

Tom Bale got rather carried away with the fun of it all and carved an attempted square cut up in the air with 19 quick fire runs to his name. Under such circumstances Abbo came in to 'steady the ship' (ie slow up the run rate), and being such an experienced campaigner and team man it was a job he performed admirably until triggered by the now umpiring Bale. I wouldn't say the LBW decision was a bad one but the inside edge stood out more than Chris Hill at a temperance meeting.

The good start soon threatened to evaporate as Dave King made a quick, concerted and successful attempt to reduce his Sunday average and Ken gave a Leg Spinner the charge trying to reach his fifty with one lusty blow, Kibby were 105 for 4.

The remaining portion of the home innings was a story of Thommo and Pedders putting the bowling to the sword in a fashion that boosted the score but let the strong visiting line up know they were in for a treat, even before the saw Villy warming up. Eventually both batters passed 60, and the innings closed at 246, but even with such a score there was a feeling that it wouldn't be enough.

Sideshow and Dave King opened proceedings. Dave bowled a tight line and made the batsmen work for every run, Bob was presumably bowling to another plan although a hefty inside edge did get him a wicket. Two things though were now of concern to the home side

1) How on earth was Geoff Baxter not frying in his sweater?
2) How do they dislodge the 'Podge' who was looking in ominously good nick?

Arthur took care of his fellow veteran with a well flighted delivery that hit the poles and Baxo presumably headed off for a cold shower. 'Podge' though was motoring and smashing the bowling to all parts, even with 15 overs and 130 runs to go it was not looking good for the home side.

A further breakthrough would not come and Pedders decided the best thing to do was to put Villy on at one end and hope he either fed them enough quick runs to end the game or reduce them to such fits of laughter that they would lose concentration. It took just three balls before the latter occurred; Abbo was quick to put his arm around the departing bat and probably recommended a good sports physiatrist.

The only problem was that the man out was not the man doing the damage. Villy was swiftly replaced to allow him to rest on his laurels but the damage was already done. Lutterworth eased home after 31 overs and 'Podge' finished on a superb 125 not out. Kibby had tried hard in the heat but one man was just too good.

Bizarre Incident of the day; The plagues of insects that descended in the last hour of the game. Perhaps we need insecticide for Bob's hair after all

Buffoon of the day; Has to be Villy. Even by his high own standards the level of verbal diahorrea was exceptional.
