A second missed opportunity in 3 weeks for the 2’s
Kegworth won the toss and elected to bat. Things looked ominous for the
home side as Moorhouse stroked the first ball of the game with some
style to long on for 3. Unlike his opening partner, Morgan
struggled and was finally put out of his misery by Breder’s
when he was out LBW in the 6th over for 1. Moorhouse
followed 2 over's later after misjudging a ball to leave,
again from Breder's, which came back off the pitch and knocked his off
peg out of the ground.
There followed a stand of 73 between Storr and Hodge, during
which the Kibby seamers of Brought’s, Breder’s and
Driver all bowled well. All beating the bat on many occasions and
causing the Kegworth batters plenty of problems.
Captain Pounds thought the introduction of spin would help break this
partnership, so he turned to Tom Bailey. This I am afriad was not
to be Tom’s day. He struggled with his line and length and
after only 3 over’s for 21 runs was replaced in the attack
by young Ram.
With his introduction Ram slowed the run rate down and
started the wickets tumbling. Firstly He removed Hodge who was
caught by Steve Matthew at long off. A good running catch. Then the
same pair combined 3 over’s later to remove the new batter
Savidge. A couple of more over passed and Ram had Storr stumped by
Tommo for 52. The introduction of the Young Leg-spinner had reduced the
away side from 109 for 2, too 127 for 5.
Whilst the Young Spin King was whirling away, Breder’s was coming
to the end of an 11 over spell in which he had no luck at all. He was
beating the bat 2 or 3 times an over without any just reward.
Breder’s was replaced by Brought's and as you can imagine the
fireworks began. Kegworth’s oversea’s player, Aussie
Holmes, had come to the wicket. Borrowed bat in hand …. but with
no helmet. you can imagine this was like a red rag to a bull, and
as Brought's got loose he chose to test out the ability of our
foreign visitor’s short ball shots.
With the over's running out, Kegworth and particularly Holmes started
to look for the boundary. He plundered Ram for a couple of 4’s
and 2 huge 6’s. In the middle of this onslaught Ram did pick up
his 4th wicket. Torr caught by Captain Pounds…. and in his own
words “my first meaningful contribution of the season”.
Brought's picked up the wicket of Sutton, clean bowled
( and breaking the top off a stump ), and picked up the final
wicket of the innings with …. Yes a bouncer, when Dade gloved a
looping catch down the leg side to Tommo.
Kegworth finished on 183 for 8, a total which the home side would have
happily given them at the start of the game.
With 2 of last season’s top 3 still missing, ( in Josh and Rishi
) , it was again Steve Matthew and Rob duck who had the job of
setting the foudations of the home sides reply. The innings
started in similar fashion to all this season. Steve started well
smashing Aussie Holmes through the covers for 4. But I am afraid
that was the only highlight to his short innings, as he was out caught
trying to hook off the same bowler a couple of over’s later. 2nd
team debutant Greg Gibson came in at 3, and after listening to a lot of
verbal diarrhoea from not only our Aussie visitor ( that was
to be expected ) but also from most of the Kegworth side , he only
managed a single in his 18 ball stay at the crease. A few harsh lessons
learned for the young prospect. Ram cam in at 4 and played a shot a
ball, most of which he either missed of found the fielder. He only
lasted 5 balls for his 3…. Can you see the pattern
emerging!?!?1
Whilst all this was going on Rob was slowly building an innings and now
with the score at 45 for 3, one of last seasons successes with the bat
John Pounds joined Rob. It has to be said, John struggled. The quick
bowling of Holmes and the accurate nagging length of Wade had John in a
lot of bother.
This appeared to put a lot of pressure on Rob who was starting to
look a little frustrated himself, playing a lot of shots but not
scoring many runs. His vigil at the crease was ended when he was bowled
by Holmes for 38. Tommo joined JP, but the latter was soon gone gloving
Savage, who had replaced the impressive Holmes, behind for 7 from 45
balls. After looking as fluent with the bat as he had done up to this
point of the season, Tommo followed JP into the hutch when he was out
for 13, LBW also to Savage.
This left the home side reeling on 79 for 6, still 104 runs behind.
There were plenty of over’s left but not much batting to come in
the fading light.
Captain Pounds & Tom “ Betty” Driver began the repair
job, putting on 41 before Tom was bowled for 8 by Savage.
Breder’s joined Dave for a brief 17 run partnership, of
which he scored 8 before being bowled by Dade. Brought’s was
next, and after the “chin music” and verbal’s he had
dished out earlier, it was not surprising when he had his fair share
from our visitors. He hung around with Poundsy , who was in the
middle of having his best knock of the season to date, to bring us to
the brink of the draw.
But in typical Kibworth style we do not like to do anything the easy
way. With 2 balls to go Brought's was caught at slip, again
of the bowling of Savage. This meant that Tom Bailey had to repeat his
feat of a fortnight previous and bat out the last ball for the draw. He
dully obliged and once again the 2’s clung on to draw.
Kibworth ended on 150 for 9.Again 2 words, that I have heard
said many a time by ex-club captain and now coach Russell Cobb
spring to mind. Application and partnerships.
