Match Report by Will Jennings
Sometimes you have to
acknowledge true class, and to cock up a game in the manner of the 4th
team at
Burton Latimer is such an occasion. The sheer level of ineptitude shown
by 11
men wearing Kibworth colours this afternoon took ‘balls up’
to new levels and,
to be quite frank, it was a disgrace. Will Jennings
won the toss and decided to bat first. Certainly the wicket had a green
tinge
but surely nothing that would weigh too heavily in one direction,
especially
against a team as young as the home side appeared to be. Malc King
was the first to depart, shovelling a loosener to Point but at
28 for 1 there could be no whisper of the carnage that was to follow,
Tom
Burton had hit a couple of classy drives and Geoff Lee looked well set
even on
a surface of decidedly uneven bounce.
However 28 for 1 became 39 for 4, 52 for 5 and onto 66 all out.
The lack
of application shown by the Kibworth side was shocking, no-one seemed
able to
get on the front foot and tough it out. Even when the Skipper
tried to
lead by example he ran out of partners. The final insult was that the
teams had
to turn round immediately as it was so early that tea wasn’t even
ready. Either not trusting in the pitch (or fancying an early exit
to the bar) Burton opener Craddock
came out swinging, two lusty blows clearing the park by quite some
distance. It
would be fair to say that Ben Hurst had his mans number but three
dropped
catches didn’t help and he made way after six overs to allow
others a chance
before the end came.
Sam Pounds had time for 7 deliveries and even a difficult caught and
bowled chance but after 15.1 overs, and with the clock at 4.03 PM, the match
ended with a 10 wicket defeat which the word comprehensive does not come close
to describing. To merely put it down as ‘one of those days’ is an easy cop out and not
one that should find an audience. The basics of the game were not adhered to
and the lack of fight was pitiful. Certainly selection had been tough but the
opportunity was offered to others, it is up to those individuals to think it
through whether they made the most of it.
