Match Report by Will Jennings

Selection has been fun and games all week and a much changed side took the field for this Division Thirteen clash. Will Jenningslost the toss and was invited to bat with an order on the cusp between veteran and rigamortis. Ken Pounds and Paul Abbott opened the innings and took the score past 50 before Ken departed the scene caught at the wicket, Dave Collins liked that form of dismissal so much he followed suit after just three balls. Enter Aadil Ali, the hugely promising pre teen sensation of Kibworth Cricket Club who, amongst his many other talents, was able to stand up to Abbo in the belly department. It almost brought a tear to the eye to see the past and future joined in that facet, in that moment. Both batsman past 50, the tail wagged and Kibworth closed on a respectable 213.

If the upper order of the batting was based on experience then the exact reverse could be said of the bowling where the skipper, at 30 years of age, was approximately twice the age of the nearest exponent. Nav Rajprut took great delight in snaring a victim in his first over but the same could not be said of Adam Samuel who just couldn’t get his bowling together. It’s a great shame but we are all sure he will be back. With the extras piling up it soon became apparent that the score the home side had to defend would not be sufficient, wickets were important. Aadil helped out the bowling with his useful legspin and got a wicket, Rikesh Patel also gained success and showed good signs for the future, Elliott Lodge was simply superb with ball whilst the skipper, and I will say this slowly for those who disbelieve, probably under bowled himself with one wicket and one run out from his five overs.

With five down and with 80 runs required it looked good for the home side but the next break through would not come. In fact the breaks only came for the fielding side as Dave Collins and John Bleby joined the barely walking wounded and Abbo was stiffer than an accident at a starch factory after his batting exploits. There was little that could be done to fill the gaps and not enough experience in the bowling to tie down the opposition.  In the end Burton cantered home with 7 overs to spare. Enthusiasm was high but , if we are honest, some of the fielding was not a triumph. The beauty of league cricket though  is that there is always next week to turn it around.
