Match Report by Will Jennings:

It may seem a s
trange thing to say after another defeat and a poor day of results for the club, but as I sit here writing this I am smiling. Yesterday I saw a team of seven Kibworth Juniors square up to a team with a huge advantage in experience and nous, look them in the eye and not give an inch. The league table might say otherwise but this team is moving forward.

Other clubs pay lip service to youth development but Kibworth are out there doing it, an opening bowling attack of Ben Underwood and Rikesh Patel caused the home openers all kinds of problems and when they departed Mark Cairns, Aadil Ali and yes, the pint sized battleship, Ben ‘Fido’ Matthew, kept up the pressure. In the final account Ben Underwood took 4-40 from ten good quality overs and thoroughly deserved his reward. Rikesh was seriously unlucky not to take more wickets and Mark came back from his opening over nerves to rack up 1-39 from his 10 overs. Finally, with a pitch invasion ready to go, a dolly catch went down with Fido ready to celebrate his first Fourth Team wicket.

At the end of 45 overs Haddon had scored 225 for 8, unfortunately for Kibworth one bat had notched 108 not out otherwise who knows what they would have been chasing?  Abbo had been in good form for the Fourth Team this season with the bat but this was not to be his day. With only 12 to his name (and, believe it or not, two scoring shots on the off side) an attempted pull shot saw the ball fly from a top edge into his face. The result was a nice looking shiner which, to be fair, saves Jean a job, but it disturbed his concentration and he departed the crease soon after.  With Sam Pole soon to join Abbo in the hutch,  John Bleby retiring hurt with calf strain things and Paul Illingworth LBW second ball you would have been forgiven for thinking things looked bleak. However you would have been wrong.

Aadil, fresh from enquiring whether First Team Skipper Andy Smith was playing for the Fourth’s that afternoon, scored a mostly patient 40 but did include one booming six on the legside. Rikesh, Ben Underwood and Mark Cairns chipped in to take Kibworth past 175 and the third batting point.  With one over to go, and Fido now at the wicket, 200 and the fourth batting point seemed unlikely. It now became a question whether the hugely popular team pup could trouble the scorers. The first five deliveries were unproductive, however the six ball saw Ben dance down the wicket and smite the gobsmacked bowler down the ground for four. Magnificent stuff!

Kibworth finished on 189 for 8, some 36 runs short of the home side but a hugely creditable effort. Being 4th team skipper might be a tricky job but yesterday I would not have swapped it for anything.
