Match Report by Will Jennings
For a team that has
consistently put its Captain through the wringer throughout the season it was a
pleasure to finally achieve a comfortable win that didn’t involve grey hairs,
chewed fingers nails and a bill from Sketchleys. The Kibworth ground staff had frankly performed a miracle to produce a
playable wicket which although looked damp played beautifully all afternoon.
Both Captains would have bowled first but has often been the case this season
it wasn’t Kibworth that won the spin.
A late addition to the 4th team ranks this season has been Tom
Burton.
The diminutive Wicket Keeper showed a touch of class in the debacle
against
Burton Latimer and again showed some particularly neat touches here as
he raced
to 36 in time at all before misjudging partner Sam Pole for Linford
Christie
(who was having none of it) and was run out. It was a criminal
waste of a
promising innings but enough was shown to prove there was real talent
there. The rest of the Kibworth innings was a perfectly timed
pursuit of runs
anchored by another mature knock by Rikesh Patel (68*) which allowed
Malc King
(52) to blast a few around the park before Scott Clayton (62*) was
promoted up
the order to wreck havoc on the visiting attack. Putting the capital
‘c’ in
carnage the four sixes he hit were rows back big and the match ball and
spare
were regularly rotated to keep the game moving. The final score of
263-4 would
surely be enough to ensure success.
The 4th team skipper, Sir Bard Chuckalot, preached the virtue of
concentration and the perils of complacency after tea. The only way to
reach
264 would be to get off to a flyer and with the scoreboard at only 41
after 10
overs the warning looked to have been heeded. However whilst the
prospect of
victory looked remote the Haddon batting looked to be well capable of
cashing
in on anything loose as they chased valuable league points
too. Mike Roberts on debut bowled 10 overs of pretty respectable
leg spin
straight through and even managed to get himself a hat-trick ball on
way to
figures of 2-38. Aadil and Tej also deserve mention for some decent
bowling and
both probably deserved better reward.
Now with 4 overs to go a conflab took place at mid-wicket between
the
skipper and sidekick John Bleby. With the game meandering to its
inevitable
conclusion it seemed difficult to know quite what they could be
discussing
apart from perhaps whose round it was or what to watch on TV later.
Surely any
tactical master plan would have been enacted long before now. With
2 overs to go the trap was sprung. Rikesh was pulled from the top
end for the skipper to launch some of his trademark grenades. Opener
Letten was
still in situ despite a couple of bruises and a debilitating attack of
cramp
and was approaching his century, unfortunately he was running out of
time. More
misfortune was to come when on the fourth ball he heaved across the
line and
was dismissed for a magnificent 92. Poor lad has to be
traumatised to get
so close and lose his wicket to such filth.
Speaking of filth the second part of the master plan came from the other
end, Tej had his second spell ended an over early to allow the master tweaker,
John Bleby, an over before the end. Lo and behold if John didn’t get a caught
and bowled second up which caused much guffawing all round, a Monty Panesar
celebration from the ‘bowler’, and nearly prompted Malc King to retire on the
spot in disgust. Two balls later only a misjudged effort from Aadil stopped
further success as Haddon closed on 183 for 9.
It was a vital win for Kibworth to preserve their mid-table station but
the sight of Blebs leaping around after his wicket will keep me going through
the long Winter months.
