Match Report by Will Jennings

The performance level of the 4th team at present goes up and down like Casanova’s Keck’s, one week cute enough to loosen the morals of a Supermodel next week failing to score in a Nympho’s nightclub. Now admittedly the opportunities for mentions in the gossip columns whilst playing Division 13 cricket in the Northants League are pretty slim but you have to show ambition. After all the whole reason for having a Fourth team is to give the younger lads experience and the chance to sample the cake at a higher level in later years. Unfortunately the small matter of winning a cricket match proved beyond them this week.

Losing the toss is nothing new and having to bat on a wicket of dubious quality is nothing particularly startling, however with the considerable ballast of experienced Salad Dodger Paul Abbott at the top of the order there was the potential of a solid basis. Unfortunately a beaut of an inswinger undid this particular plan so he found some shade by the side of the pavilion, right by the entrance to the smallest room, and snored the rest of the innings away. It soon became apparent that the pitch would prevent any scintillating stroke play, even if a suitable batsman had been found, and that runs would be at a premium. Realising the conditions of the game young Aadil did his level best to reign in his attacking game but after compiling 26 in steady fashion the lure of cow corner became too much and it fell to John Bleby to anchor the Kibworth effort, unfortunately the rest of the order showed all the application of a bloater in McDonalds.

You would be forgiven for thinking that only 115 from 45 overs is rather sub standard (and perhaps you would be right) but on a poor wicket and against a team who were bowled out for only 56 the previous wicket there was a notable lack of despondency in the Kibworth  ranks at tea. Initially the signs were good. Tej Thakker, who bowled impressively throughout, forced opener Wheatherley to play on and when Ben Underwood effectively bounced out their number 3 the scoreboard read 23 for 2 and belief rose along with the decibel count. 23 for 2 became 57 for 4 and the game hung in the balance. Debutant Mayur Chauhan bowled dangerous looking opener Anderson and when Aadil accounted for Colburn thanks to a Fido catch it became a real 50/50 game.

Try as Kibworth might though the next dismissal would not come. Balls would drop in between fielders and catches, albeit some difficult, went down. The skipper gambled and brought himself on to buy a wicket, perhaps if Ben Underwood had held on to his catch the door could have been forced open, but the lack of runs on the board stopped any serious pressure being applied. Grendon strolled home by six wickets with 9 overs to spare although perhaps that didn’t tell the whole story. So now attentions turn towards Torquay, it is to be hoped that results in the South West will be better than that gained on a sunny afternoon in Northamptonshire.
