Match Report by Will Jennings

You may have heard the expression ‘close but no cigar’, but that wouldn’t quite cover it. The inaugural 4th team were close, they had the cigar but just failed to get the light when it mattered. Just goes to show that smoking truly is bad for you.

Kibby lost the toss and took the field. A new ball partnership of Hizer Khan and Steve Elwood put in an encouraging burst that went outside edge with irksome regularity but always failed to hit the willow. Nav Rajprut bowled nicely into the wind but his outswing was similarly cursed, step forward then Jacob Gibson whose big induckers finally accounted for Johnstone with the visitors score past 80. Normally with little or no success with the new ball you may be forgiven for thinking the worst, but not today. Even a pitch that was ideal for batting and an outfield that was quicker than Roadrunner on performance enhancing drugs Grendon were not able to get away and the home bowling was , one wide strewn over from Malc King apart, excellent.

Grendon closed on 224 for 5 after their 45 overs which represented a decent score but not one that would intimidate the home side.

The ever green (but further balding) Malc King opened the batting with Qasim Malik and the scoreboard was still ticking along at the required 5 an over. The more experienced visiting attack would regularly serve up a boundary ball an over that would be smashed to the rope to keep the run chase on track. The scoreboard would read over 100 before Qasim fell for 37 runs but Paul Illingworth came out and proved an able partner. The question though would be what would happen if and when Malc fell. With 50 required off 10 overs we were to find out as one swipe down the ground fell into the lap of Long Off, Malcolm fully deserved his ovation and handshakes for a superb 88 but now it was certainly game on!

The Left Arm spin of Daryl North began to tighten the noose and well as Illingworth and Aadil Ali tried, the rate began to rise. Both batters were to lose their wickets for the cause but the equation came to 12 wanted off the last over, Grendon were in the box seat. A mix up in the middle between the otherwise superb Gibson brothers turned a two into a possible three then into a yes, no, oh s**t and the game was up. Kibworth were short by three runs and a tight game had just gone against them.

Much to take into next week but it really was a case of what might have been.
