Match Report By Will Jennings

Say what you like, but Fourth Team cricket is never, ever dull at Kibworth. After two ‘squeaky bum’ last over finishes in the previous two weeks, blow me if the boys didn’t end up doing it again but, unlike last week’s trip to West Haddon, this time the result went the right way amidst scenes of wild celebrations.

Upon arrival at Heyford the senior pro’s inspected a good looking, dry wicket and decided that, without question, the choice should be to bat if the coin fell the right way. Never one for conventional wisdom the skipper then decided to insert the opposition and let them chase the ball around for three hours under the hot sun. Unlike previous weeks the opening bowling, this time with Jacob Gibson and Gareth Morgan, was absolutely on the spot and the Heyford openers simply couldn’t get away. The only problem was that for all their sweat, toil and miserly bowling the wickets would not come,  it just wasn’t their day at that point. Enter Ben Underwood who at the moment could probably sell snow to an Eskimo and get him a good deal on a second hand Polar Bear at the same time. Two wickets in one over, and the best LBW appeal I have seen in this or any other year, and the Golden Arm had done it again.

In truth the bowling all the way down the line was superb and the fielding was similiarly excellent. Although the wicket was slow and the bounce sometimes erratic it was a good wicket to bat on and if the home side hadn’t got Pont (76) to call on their final score of 180 for 7 could have been a whole lot lower. It was the best display with the ball this season by quite some distance.

Never ones to do things the easy way Kibworth were soon 19 for 2 in reply.  Sam Pole second ball LBW and Guy Hide bowled for a brief but entertaining 9. At this stage the home side were visibly growing in confidence and the sight of a 12 year old marching to the wicket to bat 4 was surely a sign that they were well on the way. As this league is finding out Aadil Ali is no usual 12 year old, a couple of lusty blows soon confirmed it.

After 16 overs, and without further loss, Kibworth were on 69 and seemingly flying however the arrival of the two home spinners put the brakes on alarmingly, only 31 were scored in the next 15 overs and the run rate was now pushing six an over. The final drinks break was taken with the skipper telling them to get on with it. Wickets began to fall as batters sacrified themselves for the cause, Aadil top scored with 43, Abbo 29 and Rikesh 23 but with 36 required off 4.4 overs the odds lay with the home side. If Jacob was annoyed with someone else taking the bowling honours in the heat he now had the chance to do something about it with the bat, and boy did he! Jacob started by running the fielding side ragged then visibly decided he was going to do the job in grand Flintoff style as he went 6,1,4,4 to bring the side to the brink.

With only 2 wanted off 8 balls Elliott Lodge decided it was a good time to shoulder arms to one that missed his off peg by an anorexic amount, the next delivery was more accurate and with six balls to go Gareth Morgan trudged out to the middle to join Jacob contemplating a very large dry cleaning bill indeed.

With the skipper now doing a ball by ball commentary to the pavilion at Kibworth the first ball of the final over was pushed past short third man by Jacob and the celebrations kicked off in earnest.

Wonderful weather, wonderful display, wonderful result!
