Match Report by Will Jennings

The sun finally shone, the cricketers emerged from their wet weather hideaways and the disappointments of the past month were swiftly forgotten. Indeed when driving home some hours later on a perfect, drowsy evening the June washout already seemed like a distant memory. The home side won the toss and elected to bat. Despite conditions being understandably damp they adhered to the method which had seen them succeed thus far, take first use of the artificial wicket they knew so well to rack up a big score and control the game after tea. Today though they would not have it all their own way

For an artificial wicket the bounce was alarming, you never quite knew whether to kick it or duck. However even on an unpredictable wicket you still have to put the ball in the right areas which for the most part is precisely what Kibworth did. If Obelisk were going to win the league, and the table suggests they might, they were going to have to find some answers on this particular afternoon. Obelisk had looked solid at 41 for 1after 16 overs but a ludicrously good catch by Ben Underwood in the covers, diving away to his wrong side, galvanised the side. All of a sudden there was a belief that something special might happen that afternoon. After 33 overs the score was 104 for 8 and Kibworth were flying. The final home score of 152 was probably 20 more than looked possible at one stage but Robinson (22*) and wicketkeeper Naylor (25) used some long handle to good effect, a brave technique against some pretty useful bowling. Elliott Lodge had two wickets, Aadil two, Gareth Morgan one and Ben Underwood one (despite swinging the ball a country mile). The main man though was Malc King who took 3 for 22 from an unbroken 11 over spell which wasn’t bad for an old bloke with a pot belly and dodgy glasses.

Perhaps unsurprisingly Malc wanted a rest after this bowling and asked to drop down the order so John Bleby and Rikesh Patel formed a new opening partnership. Unfortunately Rikesh got an absolute snorter that popped on the wicket and brushed the gloves and Aadil looked somewhat unfortunate to be adjudged caught behind in the same over. Kibworth were 2 for 2 and Malc had to go and bat anyway. In truth the Kibworth reply was always playing catch up. At 50 for 2 hopes were rekindled but Malc fell to a pull shot that arrived somewhat before the ball and Kibworth collapsed to 72 for 7. At this stage the upset victory that had looked possible at tea had become about as likely as Jeremy Clarkson driving a Trabant.

Ben Underwood and Elliott Lodge batted sensibly and dragged the side back towards respectability but another mini collapse saw Kibworth at 105 for 9 and only one further mistake from Lager-o-clock. Whatever else Gareth Morgan and Skipper Will Jennings bring to the party it generally isn’t considered to be batting but blow me if they didn’t decide to have a go. 47 were wanted off 7 overs, so Gareth started giving it the big swing and Will nicked singles to give him the strike. At first it was a laugh but after 4 overs the home side weren’t smiling, they had got decidedly twitchy. In the 42 over Will had taken yet another risky single, Gareth had boomed a boundary on the legside and suddenly 17 were wanted off 2 1/2 overs. The dream was still alive, if only briefly. Turner turned and bowled another in the ‘whack me to cow corner slot’ but the bounce deceived Morgs and the entertainment ended for another week.

Kibworth had pushed the likely league winners all the way on their own patch and only a little more belief in the middle order would have seen them home. However if the younger lads take this as a lesson to never give up it will not have been a wasted afternoon.
