Match Report by Will Jennings

When you go up against the top of the table side you know you are in for a tough afternoon. You also hope your boys take it as an opportunity to stand tall and measure themselves against a successful outfit. The subsequent defeat may have been expected but the team, to their credit, went down fighting. For what seems the first time for a long time Villy von the toss and put Obelisk in. The visiting openers soon displayed an aggressive streak that showed how they play the game, if it was up there it was going.

On this particular afternoon the Obelisk openers would not have it their way, a sharp piece of fielding from Will Jameson accounted for one and a false shot the other. At 18 for 2 the visiting line up shuffled uncomfortably in their seats. 18 for 2 in time became 80 for 5 as the Kibworth bowling and fielding, for the most part, was excellent. A further breakthrough would expose the tail and who knows where it could finish? At this point I would like to mention an opposition player called Naylor, a thoroughly decent bloke by the way but a thorough pain in the rear end on the park. In the reverse fixture some of his late order biffage had proved the difference, this time he went out and did it again. A clean hit 58 not out, and some decent support took the total to an imposing 242 all out.

To get to the target Kibworth would have to bat solidly and hope for a match winning contribution from the only senior batsman in the side, the goatee with mostee, John Jameson. When Qasim Malik had failed to trouble the scorers and Rikesh had had an uncharacteristic failure it became time for the batsman with the grey beard, the golden touch (and the brown fingers) to show his worth. Ably supported by Adam Samuel and Aadil Ali the runs came at enough of a frequency to get the Obelisk fielders increasingly concerned. Seven and a half runs an over was doable if ‘Jameo’ stuck around as the pitch was still playing well. Unfortunately Jameo reached too far for one and skied a chance that was gleefully pouched by a mightily relieved fielding side. The rest of the order perished playing the big shots that would revive the fading dream.

In the final analysis a 78 run defeat looking like a hiding but it doesn’t display the way the young guns of the club hung on in there for so long against a team that has only been defeated once all season.  The only criticism that can be made is that yet another side had come, paid heart felt compliments about the team and its spirit, but still scarpered with the points. You get the feeling that next season if the players continue to progress it will be a different story.
