Match Report By Will Jennings
Sometimes you have to just
put your hands up and admit that you were beaten by a better side, however you
can’t help but feel this was a bit like being beaten up by the bigger kid down
the road and then receiving an invoice in the post for the lesson.
En route to the match a apocalyptic deluge turned the pitch from damp to
a home fixture for the Ducks XI. Both captains agreed that conditions weren’t
ideal, indeed they were barely playable, but everyone had turned up for a game
so why not get on with? Its amazing what a ton of sawdust and the British Stiff
Upper Lip can achieve.
With a wet wicket the spin of the coin suddenly assumed greater
importance. The Rushden skipper said he was genuinely undecided what he would
do, perhaps he would bowl if he won the toss or think for a millisecond and
then opt to bowl. Batting would be a nightmare until the wicket dried and
everyone knew it. Unfortunately Villy yet again proved he was a useless tosser,
keeping his 100% failure rate, and the 4’s were reaching for their willows.
Abbo followed up his 71 last week with another painstaking half century
that rescued Kibworth from complete disaster, if not narcolepsy. The scoring
rate teetered on the heady edge of 2 an over faced with accurate if less than
threatening bowling. After having his poles re-arranged Paul Illingworth
remarked that 110 would be a good score, looking at it that way the final score
of 104 all out looked reasonable.
By the time tea had been consumed (more in some quarters than others) the
outfield had quickened and the pitch had become closer to playable. The task
facing the visiting attack had gone from steep uphill to vertical.
To be fair to the (mainly) young side the noise and enthusiasm was second
to none, there was a palpable desire to go down fighting and to be fair this is
exactly what happened. By the time the final blow was struck three Rushden
players were back in the hutch and more could have followed with a little more
luck, Elliott Lodge took two wickets and Aadil Ali the other one. Aadil also
bowled a priceless googly which sold batsman, wicketkeeper, Uncle Tom Cobleigh
and all right down the river, unfortunately not the bails though.
Rushden looked a very strong side for this level of cricket and will
surely be pushing for promotion, and even mother natures intervention probably
only tipped the scales a little further in their favour, but it would be nice
to have the return fixture without the need for flippers, goggles and enough
sawdust to put Sherwood Forest out of business.
