Match Report By Will Jennings

With a weather forecast more miserable than a Welshman in the middle of a mint sauce shortage the prospects for any play at all were pretty slim however faced with a possibly pointless journey or an afternoon trip to B&Q the Fourth Team assembled in the pleasant surroundings of Upper Benefield.

The teamsheet looked strong but with the knowledge that the weather could intervene at any moment there seemed little point in hanging around, the toss had to be won, the home side had to be bundled out and the run chase had to be undertaken with scant regard for averages or pretty batting. At least the coin fell in the right direction and the plan had a chance.

Soon enough Weekley had been reduced to 40 for 6 as Gareth Morgan, Jacob Gibson, Scott Clayton and Ben Underwood filled their boots as some rather indisciplined home batting aided the cause. The hapiness had to be witheld though as the first rain delay remided us all that the hard work could be undone by the whim of Mother Nature.

The second burst of bowling finally saw the home side out for 119 in 38 overs, which on reflection was somewhat disappointing as some of the verbals from young Aadil were throughly and consistently entertaining. Not only a king of volume the lad can bowl too and two wickets in the scorebook proved it.

By the time a superb tea had been consumed the sun had disappeared and the clouds took an ever more menacing look. The team were aware that 20 overs had to be bowled for the game to count and the wicket would make quick scoring to win the game outright pretty tough. There was nothing for it but to bat, get the run rate up to the required rate, and hope.

It was too much to hope to get to the target unscathed and with the score on 41 for 1 after 13 overs the rain came again. Luckily the wicket could be covered by a plastic sheet but with clouds offering darker prospects than a night out in Corby all around the mood was not optimistic.

However somehow the worst of the weather seemed to pass by on either side and with around only about 25 minutes required to get to the finishing tape the players went out and all seemed well until, in short order, a black apocolypse threatening cloud appeared which was approximately the size of a weight watcher reject. Even Steve McQueen couldn't escape it and it was now a race against time with even the skipper telling his batsman to block out to quicken up the game.

During the 19th over the rain started and got swiftly quicker. The 20th over could have been sponsored by the America's Cup but to Weekley's eternal credit they saw the job through to allow Kibworth the victory they so richly deserved before the ducks took over the square.

At the last Kibworth had ,in a way, squeaked home in a last over finish for the fourth week running but they could not have done it without the outstanding sportsmanship of their generous hosts.
