Last over drama at The Parks

There were two balls left in this match with Godmanchester needing one run to win when Elliott Baldwin was adjudged caught behind the wicket for the home side to lose by the narrowest of margins. 'We were beaten because we lost one more wicket than Kibworth said skipper Paul Swannell 'but Elliott was sure he never got a touch on that vital delivery.' The skipper went on 'it was a match we should have won after recovering from a bad start but we lost wickets unnecessarily in our chase for victory.' Had Godmanchester squeezed out that one run needed for victory it would have been a truly historic performance. Their illustrious opponents had played at Lords in the Final of the Cockspur Cup in each of the past two seasons winning the trophy in 2006 and finishing as runners up last season. The match was played in very difficult conditions under a slate grey sky with deteriorating light throughout but both sides stuck to their task.

Swannell won the toss and invited Kibworth to bat and was fully justified when he and Bevis Moynan made an early breakthrough reducing the visitors to 28 for 3 in the first nine overs. Visiting skipper Andrew Smith steadied the innings doubling the score for the fourth wicket with Tim Mason (20) who was then trapped LBW by Elliott Baldwin. Simon Renshaw went for a single but then Richard Jackson (20) and Smith compiled the biggest stand of the innings (45) for the sixth wicket. Their progress was slow and at 111 for 6 there were just eight overs remaining. Spinners Davis McCallum and James Sykes were both economic and picked up a wicket apiece and smith went on to complete an impressive 51 before running himself out on the last ball of the innings. The Godmanchester bowlers shared the wickets with Moynan's 2 for 20 the best figures.

The hostile Kibworth bowling attack soon put the visitors in the ascendancy as Simon Renshaw and Aamir Mahmood sent the first three Godmanchester victims back to the pavilion with just twelve runs on the board. The biggest stand of the match – 66 for the fourth wicket by Matt Pateman and Stuart Houghton put the home side back in the match with Houghton's contribution of the top score of 36 in an hour at the crease the principle contribution. He was trapped LBW by and although Wayne Bradley (19) batted confidently the home innings faltered when he and Pateman (33) were out. At 119 for 7 Godmanchester needed just 26 runs from six overs to win but their remaining line up was inexperienced and Kibworth sensed victory. In the gathering gloom batting was very difficult and that last dramatic over brought the match to a tense climax. Needing three to win with their last two batsmen at the crease Godmanchester looked to be on their way to the regional semi-final when Renshaw bowled two successive wide balls. However his fourth ball brought the final wicket and bitter disappointment for Godmanchester.
