With a difficult wicket and slow damp outfield, a low scoring game was no great surprise, but there was certainly an exciting twist at the end of this slow-paced, rather dull affair.
Putting the home side in to bat after stand-in skipper Tim Mason won his 2nd toss of the season, openers Renshaw and Mahmood kept scoring options to a minimum, Town struggling to 21 for 2 from their 14 overs. Even at drinks, and aided by a wayward opening over from Broughts, Loughborough hadn't breached the 2 runs an over rate. Things changed after the break though, with skipper Dips Patel leading the way with a 94-ball 50, and with useful contributions from Uppal (30) and Mitchell buck (40 from 46 balls). A relative flurry of runs in the final 7 overs after Dips' departure gave respectability to the target, Kibworh needing 181 to win.
Neither Suni, Nick nor John hanger lasted long, but opener Greg Smith looked more comfortable than last week, reaching 21 in 62 balls. A significant partnership ddn't develop though until captain Mason and Reno came together in the 36th over with the score on 92, half the job done. Some fine hitting and excellent running between the wickets saw the runs accumulate steadily, despite clever bowling from Vivek and Neal Gamble. Things were by no means straight forward still, Mason was caught behind for 50, equally his opposite number's contribution, and Amir joined Reno for the final 4 overs with 22 needed. Kibworth supporters felt they had the upper hand.
Amir played out a maiden from Gamble. Loughborough felt they had regained the initiative. Reno hit his 2nd six of the afternoon in the penultimate over, the Kibworth players began to whoop with excitement, 13 runs from the over, 5 off the last over for victory. A two, and then disaster, Reno run out searching to keep the strike. But all was not lost, Amir, always keen to be at the centre of the action, hit the very next ball out of the ground for a fabulous win and a stunning end to, in all honesty, an otherwise very mediocre game!
Town suffered a second defeat in a row at home to arch rivals Kibworth, making this the worst start to the season for over 15 years.
Losing the toss town were put into bat and got of to a slow start. Only 9 runs had been scored when James Bull was caught in the 8 over, a 2 wicket 3 overs later left town on 18-2 from 11 overs. With runs still hard to come by Capt Dips Patel and Harvey Singh-Uppal stuck it out with the 50 not coming up till the 25 over. From then on town tried to accelerate the score and seemed to have got on top of the bowling when Uppal on 30 was bowled in the 32 over with the score on 81. Despite the loss of this wicket Mitchell Buck who joined Patel kept the runs coming, mainly from pushing the ball about and taking quick singles. They had put on 52 in 9 overs before Patel was trapped lbw having just reached his 50. Town now 133-4 from 42 overs. A quick fire 16 from Sam Cliff saw the score move onto 170 before 2 wickets in the 48 over pegged town back. Buck having made 40 was out in the next over, and from 50 overs town made 180-7. Simon Renshaw's 2 for 20 from 11 overs the best of the Kibworth's bowlers.
Kibworth got of to a much faster start reaching 42 for the loss of 1 by the 10 over. After the fall of there 2 wicket in the 12 over with the score on 43, and bowling changes which saw Vivak Parikh and Neal Gamble bowl in tandem for the next 25 overs the runs started to dry up, between them they conceded just 67 runs for the loss of a further 3 wickets. From 40 overs Kibworth were 122-5, needing 59 to win from the last 10 overs they were edging towards winning post and with the score on 162 in the 47 over Tim Mason having (like Patel earlier) just reached his 50 got a thin edge off the bowling of Cliff to be caught behind. Coming into the final over just 5 runs were required. Renshaw got 2 runs from the 1 ball, but was run out going a 2 run of the next ball. Mahmood wasted no time and hit the 3 ball for 6. Kibworth winning by 3 wickets taking 23pts to towns 8pt.
