Match Report

Sunday saw Loughborough Carillon Old Boys of Everards Division 2 play host to Premiership Kibworth in the first round of the League Cup.

The odds were stacked against the home side, under strength and two divisions removed from their opponents. The Old Boys, smarting from their league defeat to Thorpe Arnold the previous day, had an opportunity to redeem their weekend by causing a major upset. Although, even on a grassy, spongy track, with ominously grey clouds on the horizon, a lot would be required to convince anyone of the likelihood of a home win.

True to form, Steve Bailey lost the toss and Kibworth had no hesitation in inserting the Old Boys on what could only be a bowler-friendly green-top. An Early finish beckoned.

Ed Arbery was once again asked to open the batting, with Dom Reed his partner. A woeful start saw Arbery depart tamely to the third ball of the day from Ghuman, chipping a dolly to short cover. However, Stuart Hardie joined Reed at the crease and the pair soon consolidated to take the score to 34 before Reed was removed, again by the young Ghuman, in the 11 over.

A distinct pattern started to emerge as drizzle descended upon Snell's Nook and and an impressive, battling Hardie was losing partners at regular, short intervals to suspect shots induced by tidy bowling. As Hardie continued to take the attack to the visitors, eventually holing out in the deep for 37, no-one else achieved double-figures and the Old Boys slumped to a sorry 88 all out in 31 overs.

Although slow, the wicket had proven to behave reasonably well and such a total was clearly inadequate. All that was left for the Old Boys was to gain consolation from a disciplined bowling performance and the youthful home attack showed themselves well against a quality opposition.

Ed Bird and Dom Reed held a tight opening line, Bird especially impressing by beating the bat with regularity until removing Patel early on by jagging one back through the gate to hit middle-and-off. Damien Isaacs marked his first team bow with a tidy, mature display of finger spin and was supported well at the other end by Tom Bryan finding a good line and length. However, all was to prove in vain as Smith and Mahmood carefully picked off the required runs without further loss to Kibworth but with clear respect for the young Old Boy bowlers.

A valiant second-innings effort but ultimately class showed through and ensured Kibworth passage through to the second round.
