It was a low scoring affair last Saturday at Leicester Road, where Hinckley
entertained the league leaders, Kibworth. The visitors came out on top to win by
47 runs. Hinckley started the game with many of their established players and were
looking for a positive result following two poor showings the previous couple of
weeks. Hinckley won the toss and again chose to bat second.
Kibworth opening proceedings by batting steadily and managed to thwart the
bowlers until the 10th over. Anthony Statham then took the opening wicket of S
Patel, bowled for 5. It wasn't long until Statham's opposite number, Ross
Clarke, took the wicket of the other opener, Hanger in the next over. Indeed,
the home side did very well to limit the Kibworth scoring, whilst taking the odd
wicket on the way.
Statham took a further 2 quick wickets to reduce Kibworth to 67 for 4. It was
an excellent burst from Statham, who bowled his 14 overs straight through with
brilliant figures of 3 for 33. Once, Statham had finished he was replaced by
Paul Fisher, who continued the fantastic work. It wasn't long until he was in
the wickets too, taking the wicket of Simon Renshaw, caught by Callum Wilson.
This triggered a mini collapse, where Fisher took 3 more quick wickets to reduce
Kibworth to 111 to 8.
There then followed a lofty blow or two from Mahmood but it wasn't long
before he was despatched by Fisher, again caught by for 39. Fisher finished with
figures of 5 for 26 off his 11 overs – an exceptional effort. Kibworth were 126
for 9 at this stage and would have liked to finish them off quickly, however,
Thompson and Broughton batted well to ensure the league leaders batted out the
overs and posted a score of 156 for 9.
The home side set off in pursuit of Kibworth's 156 knowing that the batting
performances of the last couple of weeks needed to be improved upon. However,
they again started off poorly. Matt Craven was the first to go, adjudged LBW to
Mahmood without troubling the scorers. The wickets of Raj Sehn, Mike Scully,
Richard Hutchings and Tim Higgins soon followed to leave on 21 for 5 in only the
10th over.
Darren Shaw managed to survive the Kibworth opening pair of Mahmood and
Renshaw and together with Josh Peel managed to steady the ship for a while
before Peel was bowled by Broughton for 8. Ross Clarke came to the crease and
together with Shaw they put a useful looking partnership together. The pair
weren't scoring quickly but all the same they managed to keep the Kibworth
bowlers at bay.
They had put on 53 when in the 36th over an unfortunate piece of running led
to the run out of Clarke, who batted well for his 24. A couple of overs later
and Wilson was the next man to go, again via a run out. Hinckley were 103 for 8
now in the 38th over and were looking to cling on for a draw.
Shaw and Statham put up some valid resistance until the former was caught by
off the bowling of Renshaw for 47. It was an excellent innings from Shaw and
very nearly led to Hinckley getting something more out of the game. It wasn't
long though before the last man, Fisher was dismissed by Renshaw and Hinckley
had been bowled out for 109.
Hinckley will be looking to halt their losing run when they travel to
Stoughton and Thurnby on Saturday. They then turn their attention to last year's
champions, Loughborough Town, who they play in the county cup on Sunday.
