Match Report

What a difference a week makes. Last weekend it was cold enough to hang out the washing on your frozen nipples and this week it was Copa De Kibworth on the bottom square as the 4 team dusted down their whites and headed out for some pre-league swottage. Perhaps the weather was not exactly traditional April fare but if this is what you get from Global Warming I say God bless 4X4's and those lovely steak providing methane emitting cows.
Despite the best laid plans of Malc King the team took to the field a man light. Certainly 11 men had been picked to play but there was a slight confusion on the start time. 21 players thought it was 1 O'clock B.S.T. (British Summer Time), a solitary individual thought it was 2 O'clock G.M.T. (Gareth Morgan Time). Without the main opening bowler Elliott Lodge and Ben Underwood took up the mantle.
Ben had clearly developed an extra yard of pace over the winter; Elliott had clearly gained an extra yard of hair which made unkind comparisons with Shaggy from Scooby Doo all too obvious. All of which shouldn't detract from a reasonable opening which the Burton Latimer XI did well to negotiate.
The final score of 156 was a testament to some decent bowling and extremely enthusiastic fielding. Despite the metronomic accuracy of Tej Thakker though the pick of the attack was the aforementioned late arriving, frustrated lothario, Gareth Morgan who ended with a four wicket haul, three of which came in a four ball burst in his eighth and final over. Thus proving, that despite rumours to the contrary, he can wait until the end to provide the fireworks.
The Kibworth reply would depend on John Bleeby and Malc King anchoring the effort of the less seasoned performers. Unfortunately John misread the script and anchored himself at the expense of poor Rickesh who was run out by some distance; frustrating the youngster to such an extent he injured his ankle trying to kick the proverbial cat afterwards. John then completed the trick by anchoring his own bat out of the crease and despite being given not out by the umpire retorted ,”Yes, it bloody was” and turned for the pavilion.
Sam Pole hung around but seemed to get bogged down, Malc came to the crease and scored in typically quick manner before holing out and when Aadil was hugely unlucky to be run out backing up the cause became a losing battle. A late flurry of wickets left number 11 Jennings padding up in near record time to face the final three balls with Sam Pounds. Perhaps unsurprisingly the little nugget showed the renowned family competitive spirit urging his partner to “show some pride”. Kibworth closed some 30 runs behind although the result was not really the important part on this afternoon.
So, next week the league campaign begins and hopes are high that Kibworth can challenge the higher part of the division. You never know, if they find an opening bowler with a working alarm clock, they might just get there.
