A sunny and warm day for the first league outing for the 4th team saw Malc King's boys trek across country to West Haddon. The hosts were only denied promotion last year by losing games to the weather so a keen contest was anticipated.
First examination of the very green and damp strip suggested that the toss would be vital and Kingy's inability to call correctly didn't bode well. However it soon became clear that the home side were struggling for numbers, so much so that Sam Pole and Rikesh Patel opened the innings surrounded by only 8 opponents. This number finally rose to 10 by the 25th over but by then Kibworth were off and running in fine style. An opening partnership of 88 was mearly the entree to the captains main course offering of 129 not out compiled in only 30 overs. Partnered firstly by Sam and then (in an unbroken third wicket partnership of 166) by Adam Samual, Malcolm produced the kind of beligerant punishing knock with which we are all happily familiar. The poor guys given the job of patrolling the legside boundary must have gained a pretty good idea of what it was like to be under shellfire on the Somme as ball after ball peppered the rope.
Rain took the players off the field just two balls after tea and for half an hour we all looked at the sky glumly contemplating the possibility of being deprived of victory by the elements. After 35 minutes the clouds departed and West Haddon started work on chasing a revised total of 222 off 35 overs. What began as a difficult task rapidly became impossible as wickets tumbled to the opening attack of Eliot 'the eater' Lodge and Gareth 'PC' Morgan. Gareth's first wicket came by way of a superb one handed slip catch by Graham Thompson which I won't describe further as he's sure to tell everyone about it himself!!
This was one of those days when everything the skipper touched turned to gold and each bowling change seemed to bring instant wickets. Amongst the scalps was Sam Pounds claiming his first league wicket to stake a strong claim to the title of "seasons most economical spell by a member of the Pounds family". After 28 overs it was all finished as the returning 'Eater' claimed a diving caught and bowl to seal maximum points and by some distance the most comprehensive victory in the short life of the Kibworth fouth team.
