Match Report

A dull overcast Tuesday is not normally a reason for excitement but for the eleven guys chosen to represent KCC in their 150th anniversary game against Cross Arrows the prospect of a game at Lord's (even if it's the Nursery ground) was a good reason to get up early.

After skipper King had won the toss (more by agreement then spin) Ameer and Abbo set out to start the innings. For those who haven't seen it the Nursery Ground is quite small and Ameer found the short boundaries to his liking as he cracked a series of searing fours. Abbo also appreciated the fact that anything past the field ran for four, as it meant he didn't have to run two's and Kibworth found themselves going at nearly seven an over off the first ten. Then the bowling changed, Abbo was dispatched LBW and departed looking ruefully at the inside edge of his bat, and Carter bowling from the Northern end began to bowl hoops. Poor Tom Bale couldn't lay bat on ball and the innings ground to a halt with just 20 runs coming off the next ten overs. At this point the Cross Arrows skipper turned to spin and the slight and rather senior figure of Swadkin who was duely dispatched for two straight sixes by Ameer. Next ball however Ameer suffered a change of mind with the ball on the way to him and rather than smiting it straight chipped it to cover instead. Enter Bob Beevers....and then depart Bob Beevers, off stump sent cartwheeling first ball. Bleebs survived the hat trick and did clobber one four over midwicket before he became Swadkins third victim and it was down to Thommo and Simmo to consolidate. Thommo made a quick thirty before giving Swadkin wicket number five as the ball unluckily trickled back onto the stumps and Kingy produced the second duck of the innings. Both Simmo and Broughts fell to excellent boundary catches and it was left to the chairman and 'Pedro' Snr Pete Smith to gather what they could from the last couple of overs.

The talk over lunch of bangers and mash (trust Abbo to go back for seconds) was that the total was around 30 runs short and this seemed to be confirmed as the Cross Arrows tucked into the opening attack of Smith and Ellwood. Broughts and Ameer (bowling spin) restored sanity and Ameer picked up both openers, the first by way of an excellent running catch at long on by Tom Bale. The bowling work was shared around but only when Kingy brought himself on did further wickets fall. Four times the skip sent stumps flying as Kibworth contested the game fiercely to the end. The run rate got as high as six an over and optomists began to think of a famous victory. Cross Arrows however were a strong batting side and on this small ground boundaries would always be found somewhere. In the end the fourth ball of the 48th over sailed over long on to land in the midst of the small knot of spectators and we were beaten but far from disgraced. The local spectators described it as one of the best games of the Cross Arrows season and we duely felt the only possible way to end the day was with a trip to Cafe Rouge.
