Bowden recreation ground is without doubt a pretty place to play cricket. Surrounded by beautiful mature trees, several of them in flower at this time in the year, its only drawback to the casual observer is the regularly passing express trains.
To the regular player however it has two significant problems, particularly for evening cricket. Firstly the sun sets behind the bowlers arm (a problem in the first innings) and secondly the trees make it virtually impossible for boundary fielders to sight the ball (particularly in the second innings when the sun has set). Little surprise therefore that Dan Pedley on winning the toss for Kibworth decided to bat first!!!!!!
The mainstay of Kibworths effort was an innings of 38 from Greg Gibson that only ended with a run out off the last ball of the innings. Although struggling at times to get the spin of Sam Gomez away, Greg provided the foundation around which other could build a solid if not massive total.
It was a score that looked inadequate as Mark Kenny played a fluent and powerful knock for the home side but the introduction of Tom Bailey's left arm spin applied the brake and led to Kenny being run out as he tried to farm the strike. Bowden now became becalmed and scored only 9 runs from overs 9, 10 and 11 before Tony Roberts reignited the innings. With fielders struggling to see anything in the growing gloom Roberts smashed 18 off Steve Ellwoods second over and left Bowden needing 17 from the final eight deliveries to be bowled by Tom Bailey. A third ball boundary gave hope but Tom's accuracy meant that the batsmen couldn't find the rope again and required a six off the final ball to win. Another accurate Bailey delivery, a swish of the bat, the sound of ball thudding into pad and Kibworth were home. The news was relayed to the boundary fielders who hadn't been able to see and everyone retired to the pub to obtain Dan's reasons for his decision at the toss.
