The UK climate is a constant source of conversation for most people who live in this country and you can see why when constrasting last weekends Mediterrianean sunshine with this cold, grey and breezy evening.
I can't tell you too much about the first two overs of the game after Dan Pedley won the toss and bowled as I was still in my car on the way to collect my kit from home. The fault for this was entirely mine as I had stupidly miss interpretated my conversation with Dan on Saturday "sorry John do you mind dropping out this week and would you be OK to umpire?" as an indication that I wasn't playing. Once I joined the fray and was put fielding close to the wicket life was fairly quiet, mainly because the ball was screaming over my head on its way for yet another boundary. All the Clipston batsmen hit the ball hard, none more so than Chris Weir, and the scoreboard rattled along at a rapid rate. The bowlers efforts weren't helped by at least three dropped catches but they stuck to their task well, in particular Tom Bailey who reduced even Weir to something approching a defensive mindset. Still when Ed Bale finally showed his teammates how to catch by clinging onto a skyer of the last ball of the innings we were facing a target of just under 10 an over.
In reply Bob Beevers smashed the first ball of the innings through the covers for four and despite losing Tom Bailey, who popped his first ball straight back to the bowler, continued in similar vein. The staring innings was played by John Hanger who together with Bob and then Kean Folley ensured that we were never behind the run rate. Kean and John ran particularly well between the wickets to drive the Clipston fielders to distraction and victory began to look more likely than not. Cricket as we know is rarely so simple and Kean's dismissal opened an opportunity for the visitors. By now it was becoming very gloomy and new batsman Greg Gibson found it hard to get the ball away particularly against Lee Pollard who bowled both fast and straight. Colin Meadows-Smith was entusted with the final over with 10 required to win and Greg on strike. A two from the second ball and wide immediately after left 7 required from four and Greg then drove a boundary and scampered a one to leave John needing to get two from the final ball. He could manage only one and was run out attempting the second to leave the scores level
