Match Report

Town's chances of retaining the premiership took a series blow after a crushing defeat at the hands of Kibworth. Following a 53 run defeat they go from top of the table to 3rd, and with just two games left they are now 4 points behind new leaders Lutterworth and 2 behind Barrow who town play in the last game of the season in two weeks time.

Back to Saturday's game, things looked ominous from the start, the wicket was spongy with a little grass & moss in it. Ideal for spin bowling (which was later to prove the case for town) and town were without their two main spin bowlers in the shape of Paul Fisher & Martin Gidley.

Capt Dips Patel won the toss and put the home side into bat. Despite a strong opening attack of Harry Gurney & Nathan Buck they were unable to get an early breakthrough and never really troubled Kibworths opening pair of Gregg Smith & Tom Burton. Kibworth were on 96 in the 23rd over when Smith at the bowlers end went for a suicidal run and was easily run out having made 67. Burton went on the make 66 before he was well caught on the boundary by Neil Gamble. Patel tried to frustrate the batsmen with regular bowling changes but lack of a recognised spin bowler wickets were hard to come by and from there allotted 50 overs Kibworth ended on 213-6. Gurney the best of the bowlers with 2 for 36 from 12 overs.

In reply town lost both openers James Bull & Vivak Parikh with just 21 runs on the board. However Tom Flowers and Dips Patel gave town a slim hope and had put on 93 for the 3rd wkt when the 29th over saw the experience of spin bowler Russell Spiers. Flowers hit his 1st ball for 6 but Spiers had the last laugh two balls later when Flowers was caught having made 62. The score now 114-3. From then on town never looked in the game Spiers doing the main damage but was well supported by Joe Cuthbert. Town all out for 160 in 47.4 overs, the last 8 wkts going for just 46 runs.

Spiers taking 4 for 30 in 10 overs & Cuthbert 3 for 41 from 14 overs
