Match Report

Lutterworth first team navigated their way back to winning form completing the league double over local rivals Kibworth at Coventry Road on Saturday.

With light showers falling all morning the chances of even starting the match were looking slim but with 24 points at stake the waiting game began. By 2.30 the rain stopped and the game got underway reduced to 42 over's per side. Captain Karl Smith won the toss and put Kibworth in to bat on a green wicket.

Opening bowlers Paul Burman and Jacques De Toit did an excellent job of restricting the Kibworth openers early on. Paul Burman (12-1-46-4) caused havoc with his legendary off cutting slower delivery and De Toit (11-3-31-0) bowled an extremely tight line and length. When the spin attack of Karl Smith and Nathan Welham joined the party they bowled equally well. Smith claimed 5 wickets for 63 runs in his nine over's and Nathan Welham making his return to the first team finishing with miserly figures of 1 for 33 from nine over's.

Kibworth eventually reached a total of 171 all out which seemed below par at the half way point. The pick of the Kibworth batsmen were Greg Smith who batted solidly for 28 and Charlie Morgan who worked the ball round well for his 34.

With a required run rate of just over 4 an over Lutterworth got to work with strong hopes of claiming victory and climbing back up the table. Simon Renshaw made this hard work for the early batsmen with his fast away swinging bowling and tied Lutterworth down to 30 for 1 off the first 10 over's. With both Lutterworth openers failing Jacques Du Toit (54) and Craig Wilson (49) found themselves at the crease, the scoring soon stepped up with controlled classy shots creating a solid partnership to put Lutterworth in an excellent position. As grey clouds gathered over head the light started to fade creating a dull and gloomy atmosphere around the ground. This, combined with the loss of a few quick wickets meant a tense finish was on the cards with both teams still certain they could pick up the points. The balance soon tipped Lutterworth's way with Ben Pickering seeing Lutterworth home smashing Renshaw for 4 runs through the covers in the 41st over. Renshaw ended up with bowling figures of 13 over's 3 for 32 and yet again proved to be difficult to get away.
