Match report

KCC travelled to old rivals Gretton buoyed by the return of some of last year's big players. Greg “Talisman” Gibson and Bob “sporting an injury” Beevers added some class to the side with Skindog the Wally and Duncan SlamDunk Jones rounding off a well balanced and formidable looking 3rd team. The notable absentees were Clayts and Jake the Cyclops Gibson who proved that if you do keep doing it you will eventually go blind.

KCC drew first blood winning their first toss of the season and sure as eggs is eggs Pushing put the opposition into bat. Tej and Greggers took the new ball and immediately set out their intent bowling excellent lines and length to two powerful looking batsmen. Both bats chanced their arm and chipped the ball around the field into vacant areas taking Gretton over 50 without loss. On came Slamdunk from Tej's end and looked potent from the word go. He bowled good areas and one dirty shot too many got the better of one of the batsmen. Freddie Ward at the other end kept on striking the ball with power and timing and KCC made things easier for him as catches started to go down. The usually dependable Pushing could not shut the alligator claws in time as one was driven hard at him and Jay Teflon Boucher dropped a sitter at point. Despite these problems wickets began to tumble with Slamdunk bowling tightly and Beevers providing pace and bounce. Indeed it was Bob who brought about the comedy. He bowled a wide half tracker, the umpire began to stretch his arms in anticipation, the batsmen nicked off and the umpire did the Macarenna as he retracted the wide and pointed the finger for the batsmen to leave! Skindog at last proved his worth in the team as he produced a fine piece of fielding to take an excellent run out.

As Batsmen came and went so Fred Ward proved to be a one man army and slayed the looser balls to all parts of the ground. Pushing dropped him again at mid off and as he passed his century some KCC faces thought a really big score was on the cards. However Pedley always gets his man and with Greg back on Ward hit one too many in the air and Pushing snaffled him at deep mid off. With Ward gone Gretton did not have the fire power for a big total with their final score limping to 211 for 6. Mention must be made of Tej's death bowling as he went for only 5 runs in his last 2 overs! Here is a player with a big future ladies and gents.

With tea prompting some frantic apologies from Tim Ellwood who had poked one too many people KCC were confident of chasing the total down. Despite recent big runs the Fajerra was put down to 3 with Bale and Greggers taking the top two spots. They both settled in early and started the efficient and comfortable chase that would bring about victory. All the batsmen chipped in with Greg, Bale, Fajerra and Beevers all getting starts but not going on. Some will claim they were unlucky with their dismissals except Bob Beevers who was clearly LBW! It was left to Pushing and The Wally to see KCC home with victory coming in the 42nd over for 6 wickets.

KCC now stand 5th in the table only 7 points from the first promotion spot. With a much needed week off next week KCC will have time to recuperate and assess the table for a big midsummer push to promotion.

One love Green and Gold
