KCC welcomed Kempston Hammers to Fleckney rd for the second game of
the 2009. Last week's centurion Ali Dewan had been promoted to the
second team along with youngest Rickesh Patel whose ability in all
areas of the game had clearly been noticed by the selectors. Also
unavailable was Charles Hurley who would be missed and Scott Goodman
who wouldn't. However these absentees gave chances to a returning Tom
Bale an in form Tej Thakar, a wicket machine Duncan “slam dunk da
dairylee funk” Jones and a bearded Lee Butler.
Pushing 40 Pedley did his best to undo all of KCC plans by losing the
toss and he united Bale and Greenhalgh at the top of the order. On a
good deck both batsmen made quick work of anything short and kept the
defences up against the better deliveries. The 50 partnership came up
shortly before a little spinning ball crept through Bale's bat and pad
removing his off bail. This brought the big hitting Tim Ellwood to the
crease and a lovely shot through mid off saw many a spectator setting
up deck chairs in the hope of another exhilarating innings. This was
not to be however as he went LBW to a rather dubious decision that
surprised everyone including the Kempston keeper who later suffered at
the hands of the same umpire. Pushing 40 came to the crease and looked
good for 20 runs before hitting one up into the wind and getting
caught. This brought Adil Ali to the crease and his first ball was shot
of the day as he stroked one through mid off for 4. As Adil played with
great class and some unusual calling methods so the Fajjarra kept on
playing his shots at the other end. He went through 50 smashing one
over square leg and things were looking good at 150 for 3. The fajjara
then took on one too many slower balls getting caught on the square leg
boundary for 82. Adil continued to bat well but wickets fell around him
and boundaries dried up. Jay “DOTD” Boucher was looking for
low flying light aircraft to hit as he lost his middle peg and it was
left to Duncan Jones and Lee Butler to salvage 204 after a lovely six
down the ground from Jones.
KCC went into the break and enjoyed the return of a beautiful pasta
based tea. 204 was it enough on a deck that had just started to crumble?
KCC opened with the fiery Clayton with the wind and Jones into it
hoping for a little swing and drift. Neither really came and both
opening batsmen looked comfortable. Gibson J came into the attack and
watched every short ball he bowled get put into the next field. Pedley
needed a plan and he needed one quick. Turning to Adil Ali he hoped for
a quick wicket and it came with Adil's first ball a loosener that went
straight to Jones at mid off. Pedley teamed Adil with himself and
between them thy bowled some beautiful lines and lengths tying the
batsmen down. Within 25 overs it was clear that Kempston were not
interested in chasing the score down and KCC would have to settle for
another winning draw. Pick of the bowlers was Adil who made grown men
look like children but Pedley deserves much praise for his efficiency.
The Fajjara showed he was the best at the end taking a good catch at
slip and Duncan Jones was very pleased to walk away with the Paul
Collingwood trophy. Kempston finished 154 for 6 with Jones, Ali and
Pedley all taking wickets. KCC now stand mid table and a big win is
needed next week to start to push towards those promotion spots.
One love The Fajjarra
