KCC welcomed Rothwell town II CC to Fleckney rd for the first game
of the 2009 Northants Division 6 season.
The third team had great success in 2008 and the skipper Dan Pedley had
picked a side that looked stacked full of talent for the march to a 5th
straight year of promotion. Last year's heroes Pedley, Greenhalgh,
Gibson J, Ellwood T, Goodman and Clayton made up the back bone of the
side and new young talent had been drafted in with Hurley, Ali,
Boucher, Patel and Dewan complementing a fine all round unit. Bailey
had made the trip up to the seconds and was frankly out of his depth
but the team was happy to be without the hair related banter of Gibson
G and Beevers B.
The pre game chat was one full of emotion as Pedley spelt out his
expectations for the year and Greenhalgh did his best to interrupt
where ever possible eventually being put in his place by a raised
eyebrow and stern word from the skipper. Pedley made it clear that the
young lads were there on talent and the now seasoned veterans would
have to work hard and step up to the mantle for 2009.
Pedley then did his best to ruin everything by losing the toss on a
pitch that looked incredible to bat on. He then opted to open with the
unorthodox pairing of Greenhalgh and Patel. One a fine young talent
with a great career ahead of him and the other Rickesh Patel! But
neither of the openers prospered against a weak bowling attack with
Greenhalgh going for 14 runs as Clayton clapped a great shot that was
caught easily at midwicket and Rickesh departing soon after for 10
sportingly walking from a nick behind. This brought last year's
struggling number 8 Tim Elwood to the crease and the new man from the
seconds Ali Dewan. The two batsmen complemented each other well with
some tactical running between the wicket and great shot selection.
Between them they put on over 130 runs for the second wicket with
Ellwood eventually going on 82, more runs than he has ever scored if
you add up all of his runs ever including runs he has made up in his
head whilst dreaming about scoring runs! Ellwood's departure brought
last season's destroyer the Hoover Pedley and he soon showed his class
smashing a quick fire 45 as Ali made short work of his century with a
beautifully struck hit over mid on! KCC finished on a massive 289 for 3!
After a frankly gorgeous tea with no pasta goodness in sight KCC took
to the field to have a good go at the Rothwell batting line up. Gibson
and Clayton took the new ball but despite probing lines lacked
penetration on a pitch that offered nothing but beautiful batting.
Pedley then opted for youth with Adil Ali and Charles Hurley having a
go. Again both bowled beautifully for no reward. The closest chances
both fell to Boucher at point who dropped two very difficult catches
and would later regret them as it cost him his dignity and indirectly
got sick on his shoes! But cometh the hour and cometh then man. As the
ball was thrown to Boucher to offer up some “alternative”
bowling many of the players looked aghast at one another! The team had
not been this shocked since hearing that Skindog was selected in the
third team despite a clear lack of ability. As Boucher spun his web and
served up a mixed buffet of pie so the batsmen took the bait with one
giving a sharp chance to Adil at square leg and one dancing down the
track only to have his bails removed by Ellwood who could not be kept
out of the game. As the visitors pottered along to 188 for 2 KCC knew
they had done their best but 10 wickets was a pipe dream on that road.
There then followed some general drinking carnage that finally ended
for me with Boucher being sick three times on the long journey back
home and me holding his hair back. He had taken two wickets, he had won
dick of the day for three drop catches and wearing whites in the nets
but most importantly he had been initiated into the KCC way by trying
to go drink for drink with Tom Driver! It is going to be a big learning
curve for KCC this year and lets all hope our liver's can take it.
Next week we welcome back Tom Bale who will add considerably more to
the team than skinner who has been dropped.
One love it's bloody good to be back
