Match report

It's always interesting to visit a new ground and those who had the 'pleasure' of playing at Bold Dragoons old home were doubly delighted to discover that the Northampton club have moved to an facility down by the river Nene (and A45 dual carrageway....but you can't have everything).

We were privilaged to play the first ever competitive game on the new ground which I'm sure will make an excellent venue in summers to come. A huge amount has already been achieved to convert what was 18 months ago a rugby pitch into a cricket square but inevitably the wicket was likely to be 'sporting' and a huge sigh of releaf went up when skipper King called correctly and put the home side in.

Gareth Morgan's prediction of a first ball wicket proved a triffle optomistic as the ball was crashed through point for four but in truth the batting excitement of the first hour ended there. Morgs and 'the eater' made the most of the moving ball and the lively pitch and the opening partnership crawled along at two runs per over. The introduction of Duncan Jones finally produced the breakthrough and to quote the old addige (which of course Morgs did) 'one brings two' this time in the shape of Imran Mir who as a newcomer to the side probably had little idea of how lucky he was to see the Hon Sec actually cling on the a catch at mid off. It could have been two in two balls but Rob Ellwood couldn't cling on to a brilliant left handed diving effort at gully. Maybe just as well as that really would have given Imran an unrealistic view of fourth team fielding.

Bennett and Kavanagh now upped the excitement level by about 1000% but Duncan was getting into his stride in his first serious bowl for 18 months and he soon dismissed Kavanaugh with a beauty that clipped the top of off stump. Enter Bolds South African left hander to attempt a massive slog off his first delivery and promtly strain his rib muscles so badly that two overs later he had to retire hurt. Tej now entered the attack and promptly clean bowled Bennett as he put together his best spell in a senior game whilst at the other end Duncan put the Bold inning into free fall. He claimed wickets in each of his next four overs, all cleaned bowled (Note to Imran: This really is the best way to take wickets in the fourth team, not relying on teammates to actually catch the ball).

Only the eight wicket partnership of Collins and Teckman offered any resistance, until Tej took a good catch off Jonny Butler at square leg, and things were quickly rapped up when Rob Ellwood floated a beautiful off break past Teckman's outside edge and the returning injured South African lobbed a catch to Bleebs at Mid On off to give Jon Bulter his second victim.

Now lightening may have struck twice with two catches from the Hon Sec but it wasn't likely to strike three times and sure enough Bleebs found himself back in the hutch after three and a bit overs when Kavanaugh clipped his off stump with a late inswinger. Abbo however after 36 overs of strenous exercise (walking from slip to slip) was in no mood to let the bowlers past and he and Duncan shared a partnership of 45 to put Kibworth in the driving seat. Duncan finally fell bowled for 19 (including the barely credible feat of making Abbo run three) and Rob followed shortly afterwards but Abbo would not be denied and he and Malc knocked off the final 27 runs to see us home to a seven wicket win.
