That most rare of occurrences, a comfortable win for the Legends. A
highly disciplined bowling attack reduced Braunstone to 24 for 4 and
whilst the visitors rallied their score of 162 was never likely to be
enough as Kibworth cantered home with some 8 overs to spare.
Not for the first time this season the skipper won the toss and
sent his team into the field. There were some raised eyebrows at this
decision, why would you choose to bowl first on a road of a pitch on a
sunny afternoon? Well, the skipper weakly attempted, they were warming
up and everything, on a Sunday too. Perhaps they were taking it
seriously for a reason. It terms of defence it had all the credibility
of a drugs test for an East German shot putter. Jamie Thompson
roared in from the top end but the spoils of battle went to James
'Tommy' Cooper. In only his third appearance of the summer he took a
marvelous five wicket haul, two of which achieved with deliveries that
could easily have removed batsman of a much higher standard. His wicket
celebrations need some work but he is most definitely getting
there. The Kibworth reply was based on contrast. The youthful,
deft and spritely Rickesh Patel and er John Pounds. Rickesh initially
struggled for his timing but soon began to flourish in his usual quick
running manner. John however was setting himself up to launch the ball
somewhere past Pluto but with his score on 8 managed to get himself
yorked and quickly turned around to assume the mantle of
umpire. The match deciding partnership of Dan Pedley and Rickesh
Patel was, in the nicest possible way, dull. No big hitting, just
careful accumulation of runs and the dispatching of the occasional bad
ball as the required rate began to fall faster than a hung over
parachutist. Rickesh fell for 53 towards the end leaving John Bleby
(5*) to see Dan Pedley (73*) through to the finish line.
The really nice part of the afternoon though was the sheer
friendly sportsmanship that was on display by both sides. It was the
way Cricket should be played, regardless of level, and ties were
further strengthened between the two clubs.
