All Round Heroics for Pensioner Prof

Sunday XI V Magna 73 FC

Match Tied

Cricket, undoubtedly the greatest game in the world, always has the capacity to surprise you. Anyone who was priveledged to watch the game on Sunday will know exactly what we mean.

A hugely enjoyable and sporting friendly was drawing to a close with a defeat all but certain for the Legends XI. The Magna top order, augmented by Aamir Mahmood, had been equal to whatever the home side could throw at them and even 222 seemed absolutely within reach with time to spare. Even with some sporting retirements the score had approached 190 without any success for the home side. Cometh the hour, cometh the pensioner.

Ken, the only Leicestershire cricketer reliant on carbon dating, was tossed the cherry but without a wicket to his name in many long years of club service. Taxi's were being called all around the boundary.

That Ken secured his first wicket, caught at midwicket by Bob Beevers, was a cause for no little celebration. The second was a cue for much guffawing but, faced with scores level and Tim Neal on strike, he proceeded to bring up his third victim (thanks to a fine catch by a sewage producing Lodgelette) ensuring the scores ended in a tie and honour satisfied.

Earlier in the day Kibworth had scored 221. Sideshow had top scored with 59 before being retired by his skipper. Jay Singh had also chipped in with 40 odd and the rest offered some agriculture to set a score that would offer a decent challenge on a fantastic strip.

Try as they might thought the home side could not muster a wicket. The incomparable Aamir, on a football style emergency loan to the opposition had bludgeoned his quota, 3 others had done likewise and only a late collapse inspired by Olly Lodge and newly crowned Ancient All Rounder brought things to a thrilling conclusion.
