Lindum Cricket Club were crowned NatWest U15 Club Champions after a thrilling final with Woodford Wells.
The Lincolnshire club are the first from the county to have won the trophy, which was presented to them by former England captain Michael Vaughan.
Surprises for Kibworth Cricket Club included England rugby legends
Will Greenwood and Austin Healey, both ex-Leicester Tigers players,
accompanying them and a unique opportunity for a Q&A session with
England Captain Andrew Strauss. The Under 11s team met players Graham
Gooch, Eoin Morgan, Alastair Cook, Chris Woakes, Jonny Bairstow and
Samit Patel, all of whom signed shirts, bats and autograph books,
before watching Ian Bell and Craig Kieswetter bat. The club won the
prize of a lifetime in the grassroots cricket campaign launched by
premium home appliance brand AEG. They asked for the support of their
local community, friends and family to successfully build up enough
votes at www.aeg.co.uk/grassroots and have been crowned the 2012
winning team.
Earlier this year Kibworth CC, along with 39 other grassroots cricket teams, won AEG’s Kit & Laundry Package, which includes 12 bespoke Canterbury Cricket Kits and a top-of-the-range AEG washing machine in time for the start of the 2012 cricket season, and all teams have campaigned for votes to win the opportunity to meet the England cricket team.
Duncan Jones, Kibworth Cricket Club’s Under 11s Coach, said: “Meeting Paul Nixon would have been enough for most 11 year-olds but when Will Greenwood and Austin Healey turned up, everyone’s eyes were like saucers. I can't begin to say how much the Dads enjoyed today so how the boys will contain themselves over the next few weeks is beyond me!“In the Q&A session with Andrew Strauss the boys posed some excellent questions, including asking what he thought about as the bowler was running in to bowl, to which he explained that he is able to remove all thoughts from his mind so that his mind is blank. Paul, Austin and Will all advised the boys to always remember the basics no what standard they are playing at.
“We really can't thank AEG and Super Skills Holidays enough
for giving us this opportunity; the boys were in their element and had
an absolutely amazing day.”
The prize has been organised by Super Skills Travel and is part of
AEG’s ongoing commitment to support grassroots sports in the UK,
which began by supporting rugby in early 2011 and has now expanded into
supporting cricket this year.
Kent won the Yorkshire Bank U17 County Cup title at Kibworth Cricket Club, Leicestershire, on Sunday 1st September as they overcame Warwickshire in a high-scoring and high-quality final.
Kent picked themselves up after being beaten by Durham in the U17 County Championship two day final only 48 hours earlier. Determined to overcome that disappointment, they produced an excellent all-round display to beat Warwickshire by 30 runs.
Michael Waller fell to Aaron Thomason for 17 after Kent chose to bat, but Ryan Davies and Zac Crawley then put on 88 for the second wicket.
Crawley, who top-scored for Kent in the championship final at Arundel on Friday, repeated the feat in making 61 before becoming Thomason’s second victim.
Mark Adair also picked up two wickets, but James Meddings’ unbeaten 60 helped Kent to 230 for five.
Kent's victorious players celebrate claiming the 'A Division' Yorkshire Bank U17 County Cup title at Kibworth Cricket Club
Junaid Nadir and Harry Bernard were taken for several boundaries at the start of Warwickshire’s reply, but first-change bowler Harry Furze broke the opening stand at 39 when Jim Clifford fell victim to a superb slip catch by Kent skipper Robert Sehmi.
Jack Laraman and Piers Richardson each claimed two wickets to further dent Warwickshire hopes, but it was Ranjit Singh and James Meddings who ultimately provided the decisive contributions when teaming up to take the final five scalps.
Singh finished with 3-6 from six excellent overs, including the key wicket of opener Andrew Umeed for 66, and Meddings returned 2-18 as Warwickshire were dismissed in the 50th and final over for 200.
A thoroughly well deserved win and a great result for Kent.
2012 proved to be a year of cup success for Kibworth cricket club as five trophies found their way to Fleckney Road. The First Team under skipper Matt Craven managed to claim both Leicestershire’s major trophies including their first County Cup since 2004, whilst the Under 17 XI were unbeaten all season on their way to both Youth League awards.Such success seemed unlikely as the poor weather in May & June was matched by some below par performances that saw the club eliminated from both National competitions at an early stage. However the arrival of South African Under 19 player, Colin Ackermann, helped to spark an upturn in fortunes that would eventually lead to a fourth place league finish to go with those two cup victories. Ackermann made 67 not out and claimed four wickets as Sileby Town were defeated in the League Challenge Cup semi-final and a week later Kibworth returned to heap more misery on the same opponents with a four wicket win in the County Cup semi.
Most observers would have regarded the Kibworth side to be underdogs in both finals but a fighting team spirit was key as firstly Market Harborough were beaten on their own ground in the Challenge Cup and then seven days later, eventual league champions Loughborough Town were downed in the County Cup final in front of an enthusiastic group of Kibworth supporters at Grace Road. Skipper Craven top scored with 43 in the three wicket win at Harborough whilst Russell Spiers claimed three wickets which proved to be just a warm up for his performance against Loughborough, where he took 3 wickets for 2 runs from 5 overs as the north Leicestershire side were ‘skittled’ for just 114 in vain pursuit of Kibworth’s total of 164.
The Under 17s won their two awards with dominant performances, firstly seeing off Sileby Town (yes them again) to claim the league title on the back of Aadil Ali’s innings of 109 and then rolling over Loughborough Carillion for just 65 on the way to a nine wicket win in the cup competition. A good crowd of supporters made the trip to the second game to cheer on an outstanding group of young cricketers who were unbeaten throughout the season and frequently fielded a side of eleven potential bowlers and capable batsmen. Skipper Ali finished with 410 runs from six innings including two centuries, whilst Ben Matthew contributed 149 as well as taking several excellent catches. Olli Lodge was top wicket taker with 12.
The final trophy came to the Midweek side who defeated Fleckney Village in their cup final by nine wickets, one of only five of their games to defy the floods in the wettest summer that anyone can remember.
