Aside from the sight of the mother in law walking
up the driveway with an overnight bag or being smacked in the
undercarriage by a rutting hippo there can be few more sickening
feelings than the impending end of the season. The arrival
of perennial September opponents Fleckney Village CC to the bottom
square only served to accelerate this autumnal dread.
Perhaps it was some form of end of season
generosity than persuaded the visitors to field first in hot conditions
but pint sized duo Wordsworth (69) and Simpson(81) needed no second
invitation to deliver a notable practical lesson in opening
the innings as they put on 134 for the opening wicket. Add to this some
quick-fire swiping from stand in skipper Luke Spence and Lee Butler and
Kibworth would have 180 to defend after tea.
If the first half of the match was watchful and
technical the second half which secured the Kibworth win was full of the
surprising and the inexplicable. If it was worthy of a double take to
see Luke donning the gloves after tea it was
border line unbelievable to see him clinging onto a caught behind
second ball although it is still unclear quite how much he knew about
it. It was to get even bizarre later on when he repeated the feat and
snared a stumping chance later in the innings by destroying
the stumps TNT style and not just the bails. It was clearly to be an
unusual afternoon.
Where the skipper trod others followed. Jatin and
Jennings both took sharp chances when boundary edge spectators were
unashamedly backing the red as Fleckney found themselves in trouble
early on. The fall of the wickets though was only
half the story.
Monik Patel proved to be a rather rapid handful and
was threatening to close the game out singlehandedly. From the other
end his younger brother Mohang was also proving tricky with his leggies
and they shared the first seven wickets on
the scorecard between them. With 7 instances of 'Bowled M Patel'
Kibworth could have been charged with possessing either a superstar
ringer or a limited gene pool so other bowlers were tried, Lee Butler
being the one with the golden arm as he cleaned up the
other 3 as Kibworth got home by 50 runs and with only two successful
surnames in the bowling column.
Victory is always sweet, even against genial
opponents such as Fleckney, but the metaphorical dark shadow of the
mother in law creeps ever closer….
