Secretary's Report to the
1966 AGM
Sixty years ago the 1st XI played 19, won 6, lost 10 and
drew 3, figures which compare very favorably with those for 1965 as you
will hear. In
those days all the averages for both teams were published and amongst
the prominent all-rounders was one A. Knapp who scored 422
runs and
took 62 wickets. He recently came out of hospital and exchanged letters
with our president. 'Tot' related the story of the team which scored 7
runs, were all out and lost the match without a ball being bowled in
the other innings. Other famous names included in the averages that year
were four Marriott's, Sir Arthur Hazlerigg, a Dalton, a Henson, a
Garner, a Badcock and a C.H. Iliffe. There was, I may add, an adverse
balance
of almost £4 in a total turnover of some £56, they had
their troubles.
1965 seems to have been a year with no really outstanding event, a
bread and butter year, and the bread a little soggy from time to time.
We did
play Oadby on August Bank Holiday Monday, 30th August, in that respect
1965 was a little different (editors
note: 1965 was the first year that
August Bank holiday moved from the first Monday in the month to the
last), and different in that it must have been a
fine Bank Holiday Monday and furthermore we beat Oadby by 5 wickets.
The record for 1965
1st XI Played 14 Won 2
Lost 7 Drew 4 Abandoned 1
22 players appeared for the 1st XI. Dave Warren topped the batting and
seamer Deacon topped the bowling. It is also very pleasing to note
D. Gowdridge coming into his own with the bat as well as the ball,
third and second respectively.
2nd XI Played 9 Lost 7
Drew 2 (as far as records show)
During the winter we met the usual old but none the less welcome faces
each week in the tea room and we also managed, after a terrific
struggle,
to arrange a Dinner dance at the Angel Hotel. There were mixed feelings
about the success of this function but at least the lady helpers were
delighted with their broaches. Plans are afoot for the booking of The
Lodge Hotel, Kibworth late in October of this year for a similar
function.
After much teetering and shall we - shan't we, shall
we - shan't we, we also took the plunge and got ourselves up neck in
re-draining the field. If
you have not seen the field recently you ought to come over next
Saturday afternoon and have a look. For the first time in my memory the
whole
of the square was spiked, a great job well done and a fitting finish to
the re-turfing which an energetic band finished off before the winter
set in.
It would appear that some people have not been idle. Looking at the
field, thinking of the new pavilion it would appear that none of us can
afford
to be idle. I hope I shall feel less depressed before the end of the
meeting.
